Feast of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More

Mass 8am, 12.25pm

John Fisher (1469–1535) was born in Beverley, Yorkshire, and became a distinguished theologian, serving as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and Bishop of Rochester. He worked to reform corruption within the Church, supported leading humanists such as Erasmus of Rotterdam, and strongly opposed Lutheranism. Fisher defended the validity of King Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon and refused to accept the king’s claim to be Supreme Head of the Church in England. As a result, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London and executed for treason on 22 June 1535, shortly after being made a cardinal. Despite being the only English bishop to oppose Henry’s actions, he remained humble and respectful toward those who disagreed with him.

Thomas More (1477–1535), a renowned lawyer, humanist, and author of the influential book Utopia, was a close friend of King Henry VIII and served as Lord Chancellor. Known for his integrity and fairness, he opposed Henry’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon and refused to support legislation rejecting papal authority. After resigning from public office, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London and later executed for treason on 6 July 1535. More faced death with courage and good humour, famously declaring himself “the king’s good servant, but God’s first,” and left behind devotional writings that reflected his faith, forgiveness, and hope for reconciliation.
