Happy World Sight Day.

World Sight Day is an annual global campaign that raises awareness of preventable sight loss and the importance of protecting and improving vision health. It plays a vital role in eye care and in ensuring quality care is accessible, available, and affordable for everyone. It also reminds us of the difference early intervention, regular eye examinations, and access to the right care can make.

The campaign also highlights the barriers many people face in accessing essential eye care services and promotes the need for eye health provision for everyone, regardless of circumstances.

Together, we can remove barriers to eye care, improve access and help more people protect their vision. Supporting healthier, more independent lives.

World Sight Day also encourages governments, organisations and communities to support policies and initiatives that improve access to quality eye care, reduce avoidable sight loss and promote better vision health worldwide.

World Sight Day and Visibility Scotland go hand in hand. World Sight Day raises awareness of the importance of accessible eye care. Visibility Scotland aims to educate people about the challenges of sight loss and provide practical support to those living with sight loss.

Additionally, a common theme between World Sight Day and Visibility Scotland is how both promote inclusion and a strong quality of life, striving to reduce barriers for those affected by sight loss and encourage a world where people living with vision impairments can feel included.

World Sight Day provides an important opportunity to advocate for greater inclusion, accessibility and equality in eye health.

On this World Sight Day, let us keep sight at the heart of conversations and make sure that quality eye care and a good quality of life are within reach for everyone.

As we approach World Sight Day, it’s a timely reminder that accessibility and inclusion are everyone’s responsibility.

At Visibility Scotland, our work spans practical support, community connection, vision rehabilitation and accessibility training for organisations.

Creating a more inclusive society often starts with simple changes, such as better communication, accessible environments, and greater awareness. Consideration and respect have immeasurable positive impact. Our Dumfries and Galloway Community Worker Steph is a fantastic example, as evidenced by this feedback she received:

"I would just like to show my appreciation for the hard work and dedication that Steph showed whilst supporting me. She helped me in various ways, such as, application support, confidence building, skills building, and mental health.

I thought Steph had a real sense of allowing me to tailor my support, giving someone with a VI the control in this situation is vital for them to feel comfortable and heard. I appreciated the level of knowledge and understanding that Steph has, but also her ability to listen and learn when it comes to my condition and lived experience. "

If you or someone you know needs support, get in touch today by calling 0800 987 1087 or emailing [email protected]

All throughout September our staff have been working hard to get our headquarters ready for renovation. Today, major building work finally begins! This marks a key milestone in our journey to transform our main office into an accessible, welcoming, community-focused centre of excellence.

We’ll remain closed through the end of November whilst construction happens, however we are actively working to minimise disruptions to our services. This includes relocating regular activities, and running frontline services largely as normal. To learn more about the work taking place, and for full

World Sight Day is coming on 08 October!

Behind every statistic about vision impairment and blindness is a person.

A person with ambitions, interests, relationships, hobbies and goals.

At Visibility Scotland, we know that vision impairment is just one part of someone’s story. Every day, we work alongside people across Scotland to build confidence, support independence and create opportunities for connection and inclusion.

This World Sight Day, we’ll be celebrating the people at the heart of our work and amplifying the voices of lived experience, starting off with a recent service user who received support from our Listening Ear project and gave the following feedback:

"I lost the sight of my left eye earlier this year and called Visibility Scotland for advice. I was contacted by Audrey from the Glasgow branch. This lady was a Godsend to me. She was not only understanding but totally inspirational and motivational. Through talking with Audrey I have learned to adapt to my situation. I will always be truly grateful to Audrey who is an outstanding ambassador for Visibility Scotland.”
