Govanhill Baths Community Trust

Govanhill Baths Community Trust Grassroots activist-based org: wellbeing, arts, environmental, and heritage projects; and working to reopen Govanhill Baths as a wellbeing centre

GBCT is a campaigning charity borne out of a protest organisation Save Our Pool—Southside Against Closure. This group was formed in January 2001 after Glasgow City Council announced closure of the baths. After the longest occupation of a civic building in British history, we have worked tirelessly for 20 years to reopen this vital facility. We are almost there - but we can't do it without you. Find out more about our campaign to save the Baths and how you can join our fight.

We’re launching a major new community award - The Pineapple Trophy - created by artist Nathan Coley.

This award will be presented for the first time on Friday 7 August to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Calder Street - the final day of the occupation of Govanhill Baths in 2001.

The Pineapple Trophy will be awarded annually and recognises work that contributes meaningfully to activism, public culture, community solidarity, or civic transformation in Govanhill and beyond.

The trophy - a pineapple - is cast in sterling silver, rooted in one of the most extraordinary stories in Scottish protest history and has been twenty-five years in the making. It is a unique, hand-crafted sterling silver sculpture of a pineapple, the main body was hammer-raised in two halves by Hamish Dobbie.

The Pineapple Trophy launch will take place in the Steamie at Govanhill Baths at 6.30pm on Friday 7 August. Free tickets are available now via the link below.

The inaugural winners of the Pineapple Trophy will be revealed on the night.

Thank you to Creative Scotland for their support.

Govanhill Baths Community Trust stands firmly against racism, hatred and division.
We are actively anti-racist and proud to be part of one of Scotland's most diverse communities. Our strength lies in the many cultures, backgrounds, faiths, identities and experiences that make Govanhill what it is.
To everyone affected by the rise in racist incidents and rhetoric: we see you, we stand with you, and you are welcome here.
Together, we will continue to challenge hate, celebrate diversity, and build a community where everyone belongs.

Govanhill Baths Community Trust stands in full solidarity with LGBTQIA+ communities.

"I put my pride naked in the streets
fly this rainbow spangle
to lift your downcast
eyes to the wider sky.

"A man in a dress, a woman in boxer shorts!"

You know what people think.
But I have this pride just as I am.

I place cowrie shells, brass bells
and African trade beads all through it.
It allows me to remember the vortex of my dance.

If I hide this pride,
they got me.
I become like them.
so lifeless and hard
only a S.S. number distinguishes us.

I do have my pride.
I will snap it.
let you stare in awe.
Only then will you see me.

[...]
I do have my love.
And I will celebrate it today
and every day
among you
only then will you know who I really am"

- Terri Jewell, Celebrant

Alongside my favourite poem above, we've got a free poster for you. Collect them at the GBCT main office and let us hear and see your pride, rage, and love; put them as a sign of your willingness to hearken back to the others.

We're at 126 Calder Street G42 7QP. Pop by anytime between Mon-Fri 9.30am to 5.30pm.

Happy Pride Month!

p.s. W.B. Yeats wrote that "All things fall and are built again / And those that build them again are gay." and so will we rebuild the swimming pool!

Film Screening this Saturday: POWER STATION (2025)

Saturday 16 May, 6.30pm – 8.30pm
The Deep End: 21 Nithsdale Street G41 2PZ

Free but ticketed via https://www.outsavvy.com/event/35374/power-station-film-screening

Two artist-activists, Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn, set out to equip the houses on their street with solar panels, transforming the neighbourhood into a power station.

Power Station follows the duo’s turbulent journey, from pitching the idea to their neighbours and raising finance by sleeping on the roof and launching a bid for a Christmas number one. At a time of climate crisis, rising living costs, and fuel poverty, this film asks a simple but urgent question: what if the power we need is already here, in the people around us?

Stick around for a post-screening conversation with Scott McAulay, the Glasgow-based climate justice activist, architectural worker, and writer who features in the film. We'll explore how ideas from the film connect to action here in Govanhill and across Glasgow, with practical ways to get involved in grassroots change at neighbourhood level.

Age: 12A
Directors: Dan Edelstyn, Hilary Powell
Language: English with English subtitles
Content notes: Infrequent mild swearing, references to climate breakdown, poverty and racism.
