The Ethnic Minority Civic Congress (EMCC) will be relaunched early in 2020. We need a civic discussion space where Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities can debate and agree strategies to deal with institutionalised racism and discrimination in all its forms.
2019 has seen important initiatives against increasing Islamophobia led by Anas Sarwar MSP with support from Humza Yousaf. 2019 has also seen a step forward for BAME representation in both Labour and the SNP seeing the largest number of ethnic minority speakers at both Conferences.
I want to stress that EMCC is a non-party all inclusive body that groups together those BAME community activists leading important grassroots work in their communities. We work based on elected delegates coming from BAME community organisations sending their representatives to sittings of Congress (often at Holyrood or at a City Chambers) where a Congress Speaker chairs sessions to discuss motions brought to them by member groups.
We are the only cross ethnic national body with representation from across Scotland from BAME community groups where we can discuss the impact of racism in society and hold public bodies to account.
We have previously held Q&A seminars and training sessions with officials and elected representatives from Scottish Government, local council and public bodies to explore issues of how civic life works, on education, employment and BAME small businesses.
We are just coming to the end of a very eventful October Black History Month 2019 and after attending Africa Future Scotland BHM event (alongside my Labour colleague Cllr Matt Kerr), at the Sudanese Revolution exhibition at Kelvingrove museum (alongside Labour Councillor Maggie McTernan) and I attended SNP BAME Network’s Coffee Afternoon in Darnley with Justice Minister Humza Yousaf MSP.
EMCC is needed in order to consolidate this work across communities and within our communities. Join us !
