🥬🌱 From Our Garden to Your Plate 🌱🥬

Despite Glasgow’s unpredictable weather, our community garden has been thriving! This week, our mustard greens and Celtuce were ready to harvest, thanks to the care and dedication of our members and volunteers. 💚

The freshly picked vegetables went straight from the garden into our kitchen, where they became:
🥬 Stir-fried romaine lettuce
🍲 Mustard green soup with salted egg

There’s something special about enjoying vegetables harvested just moments before they reach the table.

Growing our own food not only provides fresh, nutritious ingredients for our lunch club, but also helps reduce food miles, encourages sustainable living, and brings people together through gardening, learning and sharing. 🌍🌿

At Wing Hong, our garden is more than just a place to grow vegetables—it’s a place where friendships grow too.

🌱 Our lunch club runs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and we always welcome everyone to join us.

If you enjoy gardening or would like to help maintain our community garden, we’re also looking for volunteers to get involved. No experience is needed—just enthusiasm! 💚

If you’d like to find out more, feel free to send us a message or email us at [email protected].

🦄✨ A New Guardian for Wing Hong ✨🦄

We are delighted to welcome a beautiful new Qilin (麒麟) sculpture to Wing Hong.

The Qilin is a traditional Chinese mythical creature that symbolises good fortune, prosperity, peace and protection. It is often regarded as a guardian figure, bringing blessings and positive energy to the community.

This artwork was created by Leen Ayache, a 3rd Year Sculpture student from the Glasgow School of Art, as part of a collaborative community project. Inspired by the cultural heritage and welcoming atmosphere of Wing Hong, Leen designed the sculpture to reflect themes of protection, cultural exchange and community connection.

A huge thank you to Leen, the Glasgow School of Art, and everyone involved in making this project possible. We are delighted to welcome the Qilin to Wing Hong and look forward to sharing it with our members and visitors for years to come.

Dementia Awareness Session at Wing Hong Centre

In April, Wing Hong Centre hosted a Dementia Community Information Session delivered by Julie, Dementia Trainer from Age Scotland, bringing together members of our community to learn, ask questions, and share experiences in a welcoming and supportive environment.

We were delighted to see such a positive turnout and active participation from community members, with many people taking part in discussions and sharing their own experiences.

The session explored:
✨ Understanding dementia and recognising early signs
✨ Support available for family members and carers
✨ Ways to access information and community resources
✨ Creating conversations around dementia within families and communities

For many people in the Chinese community, dementia can still be a difficult topic to talk about due to stigma, language barriers, or a lack of accessible information. Through culturally sensitive and bilingual support, we hope to make these conversations easier and ensure people feel informed and supported.

This session forms part of our wider series of dementia-focused activities at Wing Hong Centre, aiming to raise awareness, provide support, reduce isolation, and strengthen connections within the Chinese community.

A special thank you to and their Encouraging and Supporting Grassroots Activities Fund, which has made it possible for us to run this pilot project and provide meaningful support for our community. ❤️

Thank you as well to Julie for sharing knowledge and helping us create a safe and supportive space for discussion.

We are also looking to grow this project and welcome volunteers who would like to support our community. If you are interested in getting involved and learning more, please contact us at [email protected]

We look forward to continuing this work and supporting our community together.

🌱🎶 Happy Memories Café 🎶🌱

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been delighted to host two “Happy Memories Café” sessions at Wing Hong Centre in collaboration with

Through gardening, music, conversation and shared activities, the sessions created a warm and welcoming space for our elders to connect, relax and support wellbeing together. From planting flowers in our garden to listening to familiar Cantonese songs, it was lovely to see so many smiles and conversations shared across the group. 🌸

Although many of our members do not speak fluent English, it was wonderful to see how much they enjoyed interacting and chatting with Arvind. The warm and friendly atmosphere helped everyone feel comfortable and included.

These sessions also helped raise awareness around dementia and wellbeing within the Chinese community in a gentle, culturally sensitive and supportive way.

A big thank you to Arvind and Dementia Heroes for their support and collaboration. We look forward to continuing to grow the project together 🌿
