"When you're determined, you can achieve anything." 💬
After becoming seriously unwell, Lisa developed a severe blood clot in a main artery. She woke up after a week in ICU to discover that she had lost her left leg above the knee.
Doctors had given Lisa just a 30% chance of surviving surgery and a 30% chance of recovery. She was later diagnosed with APS (Antiphospholipid Syndrome), which is also known as "sticky blood disease."
But Lisa’s story isn't defined by what happened, it's defined by how she responded.
“I was more frustrated with what happened as it could have been prevented, but the amputation didn’t get me down. I pushed myself, determined to get myself back up and moving for 2 young kids (one who’s autistic) and a husband who I needed to get back to.”
And that’s exactly what Lisa did… In just a few months, Lisa was back up and walking again, becoming the first in Scotland to receive the specific microprocessor knee she was fitted with on her first prosthetic leg!
After hearing about Finding Your Feet in hospital and later through physio, Lisa found something else too: a community.
“I have a bigger family group now and I don't feel different or judged on how I look."
She now knows she’s not alone in her journey and wants to ensure others don’t feel alone in theirs too. Today, Lisa sings our praises to other amputees so that they can receive the support she had, connecting others and building up our FYF family.
Although she’s made leaps and bounds in under a year since becoming an amputee, Lisa says: “I’m still learning and every time I speak with someone, I learn something new.”
That’s what our community is all about and Lisa’s story highlights it perfectly. Every conversation brings something new to learn. Every challenge is another opportunity to grow. And every step forward is proof of what's possible.
Thank you for sharing your story with us Lisa. 💙
