The Young Artist Survey is back and we're reaching out to you, as young emerging and early-career theatre-makers, to understand how we can best support you and your development.

We recognise it’s a really challenging time to be a young artist developing your career and theatre practice. Whether you’re studying a theatre-related subject at college or university, or are in the early stages of your career, we’d really like to understand what support and connections you would find most beneficial in a testing time for the sector. The responses you share with us will be used to inform the actions we take in 2027 and beyond.

Producer Placement Bursary

Surge are looking to hear from Producers in Scotland who would like to apply for the FST Bursary Programme to undergo a paid learning and development opportunity as a Producer at Surge in the spring/ summer of 2027.

The focus of the bursary programme will be Surge Festival, giving a unique professional development opportunity of working as a Producer within a large-scale outdoor arts festival context, where international acts are showcased alongside performances by emerging artists and community participants, including opportunities to meet and network with national and international directors, producers and artists. You will also work on our 4 Nations Bursary Programme, supporting emerging artists to prepare to tour their work to Surge Festival and the other partner 4 Nations festivals. There may be an opportunity to travel to one of the festivals with the artists and the Surge Director to gain experience of supporting artists during their tour (Green Man in Wales, Sproai in Ireland, Bradford Festival in England). For Surge Festival 2027 we will also be delivering an Outdoor Arts Training Programme for artists and a 2-day Digital Arts Symposium and there may be an opportunity to be involved in assisting to deliver these aspects of the programme too.

We are interested in hearing from emerging Producers who have an interest in gaining experience of producing a large-scale outdoor arts festival, or more established Producers who work in indoor theatre and would like to gain experience outdoors.

The placement would be at Surge's office based in Glasgow with a possibility of a weekend at one of the 4 Nations festivals.

The placement would run from May - July 2027, 2 - 3 days a week, including a full week over the festival week 14 - 18 July 2027. Travel to a 4 Nations Festival would be after Surge Festival.

Applications with FST open on 2 October and close on 8 November.

Free Sharing at Surge, Glasgow tomorrow - MouthSounds
Thursday 10th of September at 5pm

Join us for a sharing experiment of MouthSounds!

Expect strange noises, playfulness and deep listening.
MouthSounds is a non-verbal improvisational sound making performance collective composed of 5 performers. Our objective for this residency is to experiment with structure around our improvising, as well as develop a visual language in relation to our sounding. The thinking behind this is to explore the theatrical potential of this practice. How can we show case our practice on stage in the lost striking and exciting way?

We would love to see you there and get your insights and feedback on our experiments.

The sharing will be on Thursday 10th of September at 5pm at Surge 2nd Floor 1 Cadogan Street G2 7HF.

Korean Mask-Dance meets Street & Contemporary Movement
A sharing led by ICONTACT (Busan, South Korea), hosted with Surge.

Straight from Busan, South Korea, ICONTACT brings talchum, Korea's centuries-old masked dance-drama has ran a workshop in Glasgow. It is loud, rhythmic, funny and physical: a mask, a drum, a satirical body that plays with the crowd.

SURGE AUTUMN/WINTER 2026 Residencies
Time, space, mentoring.

Surge are offering a limited number of residences to artists working within physical theatre, outdoor arts, digital performance and circus. These residencies are open to artists at any stage of their career, we welcome applications from emerging to established artists and from solo artists and groups.

We are particularly interested in projects that integrate technology with performance, but this is not essential. If your practice requires aerial rigging or has a specific outdoor / non-studio-based ele-ment please let us know and we will do what we can to accommodate.

You can apply for 1, 2 or 3 weeks of residency at Surge’s studios in central Glasgow. As part of your residency, you will receive mentorship, space and time to develop your idea. At the end of the residency there will be opportunity to perform a work-in-progress sharing of the work to gain feed-back from an invited audience.

There will also be opportunity for mentorship to apply to Creative Scotland to support your residency. Please indicate whether you would like support with this.

Residencies will take place between October and December 2026.

MASK IN MOTION
Korean Mask-Dance meets Street & Contemporary Movement
A Movement Workshop led by ICONTACT (Busan, South Korea), hosted with Surge

4th and 5th September 2026, Glasgow, Free, Max 10 places

Straight from Busan, South Korea, ICONTACT brings talchum — Korea's centuries-old masked dance-drama — into the studio. It is loud, rhythmic, funny and physical: a mask, a drum, a satirical body that plays with the crowd. This is a rare chance to get it in your own body, guided by artists who work with it.

But this is not a lecture, and we are not here to lecture. It is an open lab. We share the Korean mask; you bring your own movement — street, hip-hop, contemporary, whatever you dance — and together we find where they meet. No experience of talchum needed. Come curious.

What we'll get into:
A hands-on introduction to talchum — the Korean masked body: its stance, step, breath and rhythm
How a mask changes everything — presence, character, and the way you meet an audience
Where the Korean mask meets your language — street, hip-hop, contemporary
Percussion and rhythm as the engine of movement — moving to a live Korean beat
Taking it outside — how masked, physical movement lives in public space

This two-day workshop takes place on 4 & 5 Sept, 10:00–17:00 pm in Surge Rehearsal Space, led by ICONTACT (South Korea), building on each other across the two days. You must be available for both days.
