The Well Multi-Cultural Resource Centre

The Well Multi-Cultural Resource Centre Information & Advice for the diverse communities of Glasgow's Southside

The Well supports ethnic minority communities in the greater Govanhill area of Glasgow through our Advice Centre and friendship building activities. Initially set up by the Church of Scotland in 1994 as an information and advice centre for the local Asian communities, The Well became an independent charity in 2011. Working with issues linked to poverty, social isolation, limited English language s

kills/cultural differences, we aim to serve anyone who comes for help with Christian love and compassion.

*Please note any cases referred to are not about a specific person - but a refection of the general issues that people face.

£24.57. It doesn’t sound like a lot, does it?

But at The Well, that amount is about to fuel a whole month of comfort.

All of our advice services are 100% free. But last month, our lovely visitors dropped £24.57 of spare change into the little bowls on our desks.

That change is buying next month's milk for our tea and coffee station.

When people come to us for advice, they are often facing challenges. A simple, warm cup of tea or coffee is the first step to making them feel welcome and human again. It’s our way of saying, "You are safe here, and we’ve got you."

Those pennies directly help us welcome the next person through our doors.

So to anyone who dropped a coin in the bowl last month: you didn't just give us pennies. You bought the next person through our door a moment of peace. Thank you. ❤️

Have you ever noticed how our advice rooms are set up? When you sit directly opposite someone across a large desk, it can accidentally create a formal power dynamic or an interview-like feel. That is the last thing we want at The Well.

At The Well, we deliberately choose a different path. As you can see in the picture, we arrange our spaces so that advisors and community members sit side-by-side or at right angles.

Sitting next to someone changes everything:

➡️It breaks down invisible barriers and fosters a more relaxed environment.

➡️It allows us to look at the issue together, as partners.

➡️It sends a clear message: We are in this with you.

Our mission is to walk alongside people through their journeys, pulling up a chair right next to them to help shoulder the weight of whatever challenges they are facing. It’s a partnership built on mutual respect and shared dignity.

Next time you pop in, know that the chair next to us is always open and this is why.

Even with a shorter working month due to the May bank holidays, our team and volunteers work hard, ensuring our community had access to free, confidential advice.

Our May Impact:
👥 499 face-to-face visits to our advice rooms.
🏠 202 unique clients and families supported through complex times.
📂 138 brand new cases opened and tackled (in addition to other ongoing cases). ✍️ 580 actions completed from form filling, to emails, to making life-changing phone calls.
⌛170+ hours of time spent supporting the community.

Where we saw the biggest need:
May brought a massive wave of paperwork, with Universal Credit, Benefits (including disability benefits and child benefits) and Housing taking up the most time as families navigate ongoing cost-of-living transitions.

Behind every single digit is a resident of Glasgow finding a warm welcome, a listening ear, and dedicated advocates in their corner.

Thank you to everyone who keeps our doors open—whether by volunteering your time or dropping a penny into our "Pennies to Pounds" bowls! 🫱🏼‍🫲🏾💙

We are starting our week with the biggest smile! A long-time client of ours finally signed the lease to a flat marking a beautiful new beginning for them and their family.

The road to this moment has not been straight. It’s been filled with potholes, speedbumps, detours, flat tyres and other setbacks. But at The Well, we don’t give up on people when things get complicated.

Since 2021, our team has walked alongside this family through their housing journey, spending over 6,191 minutes sitting together, filling out paperwork, making phone calls, and providing a listening ear. To reach this moment is an incredible joy.

Moments like this are exactly why we do what we do. Thank you to our amazing volunteers and staff who never stop fighting for our community, and to our supporters who keep our doors open so we can see these journeys through to the finish line.

Please join us in wishing this family the absolute best in their new home! 🎉

To wrap up Volunteer Week, we are dedicating our final spotlight to the incredible team behind the very heart of our organisation: our Advice volunteers.

Navigating UK bureaucractic systems, deciphering official letters, and filling out dense forms can be stressful—especially if English isn't your first language. It can feel like a heavy weight to carry alone.

Our Advice volunteers are the ones who step in to lift that weight. Every week, they sit down with community members to offer:

🔎 High-quality form-filling and letter-translating support.

🗣️ Language advocacy, ensuring everyone gets a fair voice.

👂 A patient, listening ear and a calm, safe space during stressful times.

Our volunteers help transform confusion into clarity and anxiety into relief. The Well simply could not open its doors to help hundreds of people every month without their dedication, intelligence, and empathy.

To our Advice volunteer team: THANK YOU for your tireless hard work, your professionalism, and your massive hearts. You change lives every single day! 🥰

It’s day four of Volunteer Week, and today we are bringing all the high energy, noise, and fun to celebrate our incredible Bubbles Toddler Group volunteers!

Bubbles toddler group is a whirlwind of toys, nursery rhymes, singing, and parents connecting. But behind all the play, there is a deep sense of community and one of our volunteers makes this week extra special.

Years ago, she first walked through our doors as a parent, bringing her own little one to the group. Today, she is on the other side of the welcome mat! 🌟

By volunteering with Bubbles, she is:

💬 Practicing and building her own English language skills in a supportive environment.

🤝 Giving back to the space that supported her.

👋 Using her unique experience to warmly welcome and settle other parents from her community into the group.

Our Bubbles volunteers create an important space for women to share the joys and challenges of raising wee ones.

To our amazing Bubbles team: THANK YOU for bringing the fun, the songs, and the big hearts to our toddler group! 🥰

It’s day three of Volunteer Week, and today we are celebrating the incredible teams behind our Chai & Chat ladies' group and our Men’s Group!

From setting up crafts and table games to keeping the kettle boiling, these volunteers don’t just run activities—they break isolation. They create a warm, safe sanctuary where neighbours can share a laugh, share a burden, and build real lasting friendships.

To our Men's Group and Chai & Chat volunteer teams: Thank you for bringing the energy, the smiles, and the heart to The Well every single week! 🥰
