Fairness in action: making a positive difference 🌍✨

In our final sessions on fairness, mentors and children think about how they can put this character strength into action in their friendships, schools, families, and communities.

Through stories, scenarios, and reflection, children explore how fairness can involve sharing, including others, speaking up, showing compassion, and thinking about what different people need. The Wisebook activities invite children to imagine a fairer world and reflect on small actions they can take to help create it.

They think about questions like:
⭐ How can I use my strengths to treat others fairly?
⭐ What can I do differently now that I understand fairness more?

Fairness brings together so much of the WISE journey: self-knowledge, growth mindset, resilience, self-control, good judgement, empathy, and responsibility.

As children complete this final character strength, they are encouraged to see themselves as people who can make positive choices and positive change in the world around them! πŸ’ͺπŸ’™πŸ’›

Understanding fairness πŸ’—βš–οΈ

After exploring good judgement, how to think carefully about choices, consequences, and others’ feelings, our mentees moved on to the final character strength of the year: fairness!

In sessions on fairness, mentors and children explore an important idea: being fair does not always mean treating everyone exactly the same. Sometimes, fairness means noticing what different people need and responding with care.

Groups tried this out through fun activities, including challenges where children of different heights were given the same task, like racing to erase something high up on the board. These activities helped bring the idea to life: equal treatment is not always the same as fair treatment.

Together, mentors and children reflect on questions like:

πŸ’‘ What does fairness really mean?
🀝 Who needs support in this situation?
πŸ‘€ How can I notice when something is unfair?
🌱 What would it look like to respond with kindness and good judgement?

These conversations help children understand fairness as way of treating people well and helping everyone take part. πŸ’™πŸ’›

Edinburgh Zoo 2/2 πŸ’βœ¨

Our second two groups of projects also enjoyed a fantastic trip to Edinburgh Zoo! πŸ…

The children had so many opportunities to learn about animals, habitats, and the natural world.

At WISE, we believe experiences like this matter. They help broaden children’s horizons, spark curiosity, and give them opportunities they may not otherwise have. New environments can build confidence too, as children navigate unfamiliar spaces, ask questions, make choices, and share their excitement with peers, mentors, and project leaders. 🌱

These trips are part of creating enriching experiences that support children’s wellbeing, relationships, and sense of possibility. πŸ’™πŸ’›

Edinburgh Zoo 1/2 πŸ§πŸ¦’

Last month, we took our mentoring projects to Edinburgh Zoo! Our first two groups had a brilliant day out exploring, learning, and spending time together in a new environment. πŸ’™πŸ’›

The children spotted penguins, lemurs, capybaras, giraffes, a tiger, and lots more incredible animals along the way! It was a great day for exploring wildlife, asking questions, and experiencing something different.

Trips like this are an important part of WISE because they give mentors and mentees the chance to connect outside of regular sessions. Walking around together, deciding which animals to visit next, sharing favourite moments, and discovering new things all create space for relationships to grow in a relaxed and memorable way. 🀝

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day possible! 🌟

Practising good judgement in real life 🌟

Good judgement grows through practice and in our mentoring sessions, children explore what thoughtful choices can look like in real situations.

With their mentors, they work through scenarios, problem-solving activities, and looking at situations through someone else’s shoes, helping them think about different perspectives before deciding how to respond. πŸ’

They reflect on questions like:
⭐ Can I control this problem?
⭐ What are some possible solutions?
⭐ What could be the consequences?
⭐ Who could I ask for advice?
⭐ How can I take responsibility for my actions?

This helps children see that good judgement includes more than decision-making. It also means understanding others’ feelings, asking for help when we’re unsure, and learning from mistakes instead of blaming others.

With mentors guiding them through these conversations, children develop the confidence to pause, reflect, and choose actions that show care for themselves and others. πŸ’™πŸ’›

✨ A little while ago now, we ran another lovely WISE Family Day, bringing children, families, mentors, and the wider community together for an afternoon of creativity, play, and connection πŸ’™πŸ’›

There was plenty happening throughout the day, from colourful Hama beads and loom bands 🎨 to outdoor games and creative Play-Doh activities 🌱

As always, the focus was on creating a safe and welcoming space where children could build confidence, relationships, and wellbeing through fun shared experiences. These days also give mentors, mentees, and families a chance to connect in a more relaxed environment and strengthen the sense of community around the programme. 🀝✨

🌱 Practising self-control in everyday moments

Self-control takes practice, so in our sessions we focus on simple, practical tools children can use in real life.

Children use tools like the emotions wheel to better understand what they’re feeling, and explore the triggers that can lead to quick reactions.

They practise strategies like:
✨ stopping and breathing
✨ noticing what’s happening in their body
✨ choosing a more helpful response

Hands-on activities, like using the stress balls they made in sessions, help children manage strong emotions and feel more in control in the moment.

Through reflection, they also identify one small action they can practise during the week, to help them grow over time. πŸ’™πŸ’›

🧠 Fast brain vs slow brain!

After completing the topic of resilience, our mentors and children tackle the next topic: SELF-CONTROL! πŸ’ͺ

In our self-control sessions, children explore the idea of the fast brain and slow brain, understanding how our fast reactions can take over, and how we can pause and think instead.

We even play games like Red Light / Green Light, which is an impulse control running game, and Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes with a twist! This is designed to catch automatic reactions and help children practise slowing down and paying attention πŸ‘€

Together, they reflect on questions like:
⭐ What happens when I react quickly?
⭐ How can I pause before I act?

These sessions help children see that while our emotions our valid, how we respond to them is what matters. πŸ’™πŸ’›

🚌 WISE Spring Camp 4/4: Trip Day and Thanks! πŸ”¬

A highlight of our Spring Camp was our trip to the Glasgow Science Centre, which gave children the chance to explore, learn, and experience something new together.

Trips are an important part of what we do. They provide enriching experiences that spark curiosity, inspire learning, and create opportunities for children to see the world beyond their everyday environments.

For many, it was also a chance to spend time with their mentors in a completely different setting, strengthening relationships through shared discovery and fun. 🀝

From interactive exhibits to hands-on learning, the day was full of excitement, curiosity, and connection.

Experiences like this help children build confidence, expand their horizons, and create lasting memories.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all the incredible staff and mentors who made our Spring Camp what it was!!! πŸ’™πŸ’›
