Save The Egyptian Halls This page was created in 2011 to save a listed building in Glasgow from demolition.

In 2026, a plan was finally agreed to restore and develop it, saving at least one part of the city's heritage. Planning permission is being sought to demolish Union Street's historic Egyptian Halls, completed in 1872. The building is one of the most spectacular examples of the work of internationally-renowned Victorian architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. Unless public money can be found to save i

t, the building may be condemned as soon as Summer 2011 and demolished. Once the developers have been granted permission to knock it down, Scotland will lose one of its architectural jewels. It was described by Neil Baxter, secretary of the Royal Incorporation Of Architects in Scotland, as "the finest surviving example of an Alexander Thomson commercial building. This is a building of the first international importance and it would be a great pity if lack of a relatively small amount of money in terms of public expenditure, condemned this building." Despite decades of neglect the building is sound and can still be saved for future purpose - if we act soon enough.

The first stages of the redevelopment of Glasgow's A-Listed Egyptian Halls have begun. The building is in the process of being acquired by Glasgow City Council from its owner, the protective scaffolding is being removed and renovation plans requiring 'minimal structural alterations' have been proposed.

There's a long way still to go to save and restore the Egyptian Halls, but it's heartening to see the building start to emerge from behind the scaffolding.

The facade of Alexander "Greek" Thomson's Egyptian Halls has finally started emerging from behind the scaffolding after nearly 20 years. Follower Robert Leckie shared this cracking image, taken from the ScotRail bothy across the street. More scaffolding will go up though, in order to facilitate repairs to the 154 year old building which is the subject of a CPO-backed scheme which would see it converted to a hotel.
