The Beedookit’s newest addition, an observation hive!

An observation hive is type of hive with a glass observation window so you can see into a honey bee hive without disturbing the colony. The hive was created so our visiting school groups can experience the inner going-ons of a hive throughout school term, even in winter months when our honey bees are less active.

The hive was custom built from reclaimed red cedar and features hand-cut shingles on the side, painted the colours of the pollen collected by the dookit’s bees. The hive was built and designed by carpenters Alasdair Gauld and Finn Toohey, and the Children’s Wood’s beekeeper Katie Muir.

The project was made possible by the support of the Allied Vehicles Group and Allied Vehicles Charitable Trust and photographs by Scott Mcclure.

Big thanks to today’s hard- working OVO volunteer team 👆🏼This group has sorted out our pavements and cut back vegetation growing out through the fences. Also some thorough meadow weeding/ taking out Alchemilla Mollis was done. 🙌🏻 OVO come back any time!!
