The need for this repair was caused by battery and spring corrosion. Here's some advice from our volunteer Jan:
"In my experience, the carbon-zinc batteries tend to leak more often, but they are generally used in low-power situations like clocks and remote controls, where they would leak before running out of power. For these use cases, I recommend alkaline instead of carbon-zinc."
