ACWA Scotland Visits Traces of Empire at Summerlee Museum

On Saturday, October 3rd, 2026, members of the African & Caribbean Women’s Association (ACWA Scotland) visited Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life to explore the opening of the Traces of Empire exhibition panels, developed as part of the Historic Environment Scotland (HES) project.

The visit offered an opportunity to engage with the stories, experiences and contributions of communities whose histories are an important part of Scotland’s shared heritage. Through these panels, Traces of Empire encourages reflection, conversation and a deeper understanding of the connections between history, identity and belonging.

The Traces of Empire exhibition is running at the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, from October 3 to November 1, 2026

Our wonderful ACWA ladies were delighted to attend CRER’s Black History Month event on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at the Royal College Building in Glasgow. ACWA joined others to celebrate Black heritage, recognise our contributions and honour the communities that continue to shape Scotland.

On Monday 21st September, ACWA women took part in a Glasgow Museum's Black History Handling Kit session, exploring a fascinating collection of objects and stories connected to history, heritage and lived experiences.

Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival: As part of Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival 2026, The Women’s Mic by ACWA explored “The Place That Made Us”, bringing together stories of people and places that have shaped our lives and communities.

ACWA Scotland is delighted to share our video, “For the Places That Made Us”, featuring conversations with Yvonne Caddell, Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival Manager, and Dr Jennifer Novotny, Diverse Heritage Manager at the Scottish Civic Trust.

ACWA ladies joined a cross-section of women at the Scottish Women’s Convention round-table discussion, “Your Community, Your Say: Women’s Priorities,” held on 29 August 2026 at the Pearce Institute in Glasgow. The discussion provided an opportunity for women to share their experiences, priorities and perspectives on issues affecting their communities, and to contribute to wider conversations around women’s voices and participation in Scotland.
