Freelance models, Alex & Katy, negotiated their fee in ice-cream for showing off their new hats. These gorgeous hats were made in Malawi by young people at StekaSkills. We collaborate with this Scotland-Malawi NGO in various ways and love the products which they sell.
These particular hats are already being well-used in Auckland where sun safety is a real issue (not like most of the time in Scotland!).

Have hats, will travel!
We hope to have some at a stall in the yardsale (Edinburgh) on 17th May .... exciting times 🥳

We so appreciate all that Charlie Miller Salons do for us . We are so proud of our Cat Nicolson hairdressing school and all it achieves. And thanks to last year’s sales at Charlie Miller we were able to buy a Starlink satellite dish so that all our learners can now access the internet- it’s all absolutely life changing. Thank you Charlie Miller staff and clients and happy Christmas to you all .

We are delighted to be invited to discuss STEKAskills' model of critical dialogue aimed at challenging deficit models of development at Stobo Village Hall on Saturday

In a context of mounting evidence that current deficit based models of development, at best, inhibit success and at worst are racist, Emma Wood, Chair of the charity STEKAskills, shares an alternative model co-produced over several years with young people living at the STEKA care home in Malawi. It focusses on using critical dialogue to address issues of power, race and inequalities and to challenge donor dependency . This practical approach, designed to overcome entrenched and embedded perspectives, was presented as an impact case study by Queen Margaret University to the most recent audit of research excellence (known as the REF) where it was judged to be world leading / internationally significant. Young Scots and Malawian participants in critical dialogue groups call them 'lifechanging'. Come long to hear more about the approach and underpinning philosophy at the Stobo Community Coffee morning in the Stobo Village Hall at 10.30 on Saturday 8th November. Emma Wood is also an honorary research fellow t Queen Margaret University and the model of critical dialogue was developed with the support of a Scottish Government small grant.
