Women in Journalism - AI for Journalists Course: Ten Session Bundle

Over ten lunchtime sessions WiJ will cover everything from finding better stories and researching documents to verification, AI agents, social media, APIs and the ethical questions every newsroom is now facing. You’ll learn from journalists at Newsquest, CNN, BBC Verify, The Newsroom and more, all sharing the techniques they use in their own reporting.

By the end you’ll know which AI tools are genuinely worth your time, how other journalists are using them in their reporting, and where they can help you work faster without compromising accuracy.

The course is open to both men and women.

When: Every Wednesday lunchtime 12.30pm-1.30pm from October 7 until December 9.

Where: Online via Zoom

Watch back: All sessions are recorded. Ticket holders will receive a recording after the event along with any accompanying slides and notes provided by the session leader.

This bundle is £80 for WiJ members and £160 for non-members.

Applications are open for the MWP Emerging Women Journalists Fellowship 2026–27.

The Fellowship supports women from migrant and racialised backgrounds in Scotland who are studying or have recently graduated in journalism, media, communications or related fields.

Fellows receive professional training, one-to-one mentoring, publication opportunities, industry experience, professional networking and a £600 stipend.

Sponsored by the National Union of Journalists and Edinburgh Art Festival, NUJ Photographers' Council chair, Natasha Hirst, will be joined by a panel of accomplished photographers: Alicia Bruce, Arusa Qureshi and Christian Noelle Charles

The panel discussion links with the Sandra George exhibition which celebrates the legacy of Sandra George’s life, community work and photographic archive and provides the basis which to examine how the influence of social class, gender, and racial politics can shape community-based practice.

No journalist should face harassment or threats as part of their job. The NUJ stands complete solidarity with journalists at the Daily Record and elsewhere who are facing intimidation for their reporting, including exposing those agitators behind the recent far-right protests in Scotland.

NUJ has seen "increasing amount of abuse and threats" towards journalists in Scotland in recent weeks.

Where were the women of colour in the election coverage?
This free online webinar will hear key findings from media monitoring research by Pass The Mic in partnership with the University of Strathclyde

Pass the Mic partnered with researchers at the University of Strathclyde to conduct media monitoring during the Scottish Parliament elections and assessed how many women of colour were included as experts or asked their opinion at this critical moment. The findings are a disappointing illustration of the deep representation and inclusion issues we have across media, commentary, and influencing in Scotland.

The sudden decision to physically restrict journalists to a pen and prevent them questioning parliamentarians at Holyrood is ridiculous, unnecessary and should be overturned.

The Scottish Parliament was founded on the principles of openness and accountability, so it is inexplicable that the Presiding Officer has made a decision that restricts legitimate scrutiny. Journalists have a duty to question elected representatives and the people of Scotland deserve to hear their answers.

The NUJ has said that the sudden decision to physically restrict journalists and prevent them questioning parliamentarians at Holyrood should be overturned.
