NUJ Scotland

NUJ Scotland Follow us on Twitter for up to the minute news. The majority of our members in Scotland work in Glasgow. Check out the courses and training offered in Scotland.

Key employers include BBC Scotland, Scottish Television, Daily Record & Sunday Mail, Newsquest (Herald & Times), Daily Mail, Daily Express, Metro, Sunday Post and Harper Collins, as well as a number of radio stations and weekly titles. Although based in Glasgow, the NUJ Scottish office covers the whole of Scotland with members in Scotsman Publications, Chambers Harrap, Scottish Parliament PR and R

esearch staff in Edinburgh. The office also has responsibility for the Highlands and Islands as well as the far-flung islands of Orkney and Shetland. Across the central belt, including Lanarkshire and Ayrshire and down to the Borders, the main employers are weekly newspapers. The union office in Scotland is responsible for collective bargaining, particularly pay negotiations, working with the group chapels. It also helps members with individual representation, including assistance with grievances and support in disciplinary cases or tribunals. The Scottish office has developed specific training programmes which aim to raise the skills levels of members to meet the demands of the industry. There is also a Scottish campaigns website located at www.nujscotland.org.uk

There is a range of agreements to be negotiated every year with most of the companies named above, and there are also individual contracts for freelances and PR staff. The office also provides support to active branches across Scotland and services campaigns initiated through the Scottish Executive Council. Recent campaigns include a profile drive to highlight stress and trauma in newsrooms, with a number of chapels carrying out health and safety surveys, along with academic backing from members. We’re using this information to ensure that employers give our members the support they need. The NUJ’s Scottish office also engages in a range of political work. This includes managing relationships with the STUC and Scottish Committee of the Federation of Entertainment Unions. We hold regular meetings with ministers and MSPs to discuss issues affecting our industry including training and health and safety.

The sudden decision to physically restrict journalists to a pen and prevent them questioning parliamentarians at Holyrood is ridiculous, unnecessary and should be overturned.

The Scottish Parliament was founded on the principles of openness and accountability, so it is inexplicable that the Presiding Officer has made a decision that restricts legitimate scrutiny. Journalists have a duty to question elected representatives and the people of Scotland deserve to hear their answers.

The NUJ has said that the sudden decision to physically restrict journalists and prevent them questioning parliamentarians at Holyrood should be overturned.

The National Union of Journalists has accused STV’s leadership of failing staff and presiding over a newsroom suffering from excessive workloads, low morale and widespread distrust, in an open letter sent to chief executive Rufus Radcliffe ahead of the broadcaster’s annual general meeting.

This is an inexplicable decision. The consultation closed over a month ago, so Ofcom cannot claim to have been not aware of the large number of responses, and none of Ofcom's consultation principles explain why the Scottish elections should play any part in the timing of the announcement.

The TV regulator said the decision would now be made after May's Holyrood election - not before Easter as planned.

NUJ members at Wyvex Media have secured formal trade union recognition, alongside a new house agreement that delivers transparent pay scales and a 7.3% pay rise for journalists.

“If Ofcom wants to join with STV in defending the proposals, which are opposed by STV's own journalists, opposed by leaders of the five main political parties in Scotland, opposed by 83% of viewers, and opposed by business leaders, then I think viewers have a right to question whether this supposedly independent regulator is really acting to protect the public interest."

The NUJ has blasted Ofcom after the regulator described proposals that include axing STV North as the "best thing for audiences across Scotland" and for the "sustainability" of its licence.
