28th Sunday of the Year

All are invited.
“He did not say: “Some must come by this way and others by that.”
His mercy is so great that He has forbidden none to strive to come and drink of this fountain of life.
Blessed be He for ever!
It is certain that He will forbid no one to come:
indeed, He calls us publicly, and in a loud voice, to do so.”

St. Teresa of Avila wrote these words to encourage us all to answer the call to
develop a life of prayer and friendship with Christ, to taste the richness of his love and mercy
poured out for us and in us.
We celebrate her feast day this week on Thursday 15th October.

27th Sunday
The stone rejected by the builders has become the keystone.

If we are caring for God's vineyard in whatever way,
surely we would rejoice when the Son came.
Often it is the seemingly important people who want to cling to the glory,
who think it has all been there own work,
that they literally "own the place".
Jesus hardly gets a word in edgeways!
It can be easy to forget what a privilege it is to be called to do his work.

Who knows but that the stone rejected
might be the one who quietly gets on with it in the background,
washes up after the big meeting,
makes a quiet suggestion that is taken up by someone else.
These people are just glad that they are part of building up God's kingdom.
We might be surprised at the identity of the keystones
in our parish, our community, our Church!

Today's second reading gives us the example of
the total spiritual poverty of Christ.

Jesus words in the gospel show us that
the greatest block to receiving grace and mercy
is to refuse to acknowledge our absolute need of God.

As we hear in the Responsorial Psalm:

The Lord is good and upright.
He shows the path to those who stray,
He guides the humble in the right path,
He teaches his way to the poor.

Let us listen to the words of St. Therese
whose feast we will be celebrating on Thursday

“ What pleases Jesus is that he sees me loving my littleness and my poverty,
the blind hope I have in his mercy…….
Let us love our littleness,
let us love feeling nothing, then we shall be poor in spirit.”
(St. Therese)

PAY WHAT YOU OWE ME!
A cry from one poverty stricken debtor to another!

In most of us there is a deep cavern of incompletion,
a God-sized hole which sends us out in search of what will fill it.
Sometimes it takes a lifetime of failed attempts to discover that
the sources we have been going to are just as empty as ourselves.
Our best relationships can have a current of resentment or turn sour
because the other persons is totally incapable of meeting our needs,
not out of ill will, but because they are empty too.
We can become angry and demanding people
not only of others but of life itself.

Only when we go to the SOURCE, the ONE who demands nothing,
but gives and forgives everything
can we hope to be forgiving people.
Let go your clutch on the throat of others, events, life itself.
Turn to the Master who demands nothing
but an acceptance of your own poverty and dependence.
