There’s still time to join us this October Week. 🍂

There's only a handful of spaces remaining on our Mackintosh-inspired lantern workshops. Come along to explore colour, pattern and light as you experiment with marbling inks before constructing a unique lantern to take home.

Aimed at 5-12 year olds.

Looking to get creative this October Week? Book onto one of our family-friendly sessions to make your very own Mackintosh-inspired Halloween lantern.

Inspired by the clever use of light in the Tearooms, design, build and collage a colourful lantern that will brighten up those Autumn days.

September has been a busy month with our Learning Department resuming community visits after the summer.

This month we welcome Community Info Source, Hidden Gardens Community Group, Govan Community Project and Marvellous Initiative.

Each visit is guided by our Learning Team and includes a building tour, tea and cake in our tearoom, a stenciling workshop and a self-led visit to our exhibition.

Glasgow Doors Open Day Festival is in full swing! Do you want to engage with more of Glasgow’s rich heritage history? This weekend you can explore our exhibition and take part in a self-led tour of our whole building, completely free of charge.

Enjoy this opportunity to experience Mackintosh design at your own pace and learn about how the tearoom was the place to be for socialising.

There will also be a free learning activity in our Billiard Room encouraging you to discuss your memories of our building with your friends and family.

🗓️ Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September.

Our standard paid-for guided tours (1000 and 1100) will continue as normal and are available online and on-site.

Still undecided on what to do this Glasgow Doors Open Day? Why not visit the Mackintosh Tearooms to learn about the magic of the tearooms, experience Mackintosh's designs in person and reminisce about our building's history?

We have a range of events for you to take part in. All offers are free of charge.

Why did Mackintosh design chairs with such high backs?

These striking chairs were created for our Salon de Luxe, one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s most remarkable interiors. 8 high-backed chairs were arrange around the tables, each upholstered in rich purple velvet and finished with silver-coloured aluminium flake and tiny squares of pink and violet glass.

But the height wasn’t just about making an impact. The chairs helped create “islands of privacy” within the tearoom, enclosing each table and giving diners a more intimate space of their own.

And they certainly made an impression. In 1904, the Glasgow Evening News described them as: “The chairs is no’ like ony ither chairs ever I clapped eyes on… I never in my life saw the like o’t afore.”

Today marks the anniversary of Charles and Margaret's wedding. 💒✨

On this day in 1900, the couple were married in St Augustine's Episcopal church in Dumbarton. As partners both creatively and romantically, their marriage was a very equal one, and Charles often referred to Margaret as his 'spirit key'. 🔑

Today, our Mackintosh Illuminated project is bringing new focus to the remarkable legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, while working to secure the future of two of their most significant surviving creations: The Mackintosh Tearooms in Glasgow and The Hill House NTS in Helensburgh.
