About GAS

GAS was established in 2016 when we took on the lease of a large warehouse building in Tradeston, Glasgow. No. Yes.

Glasgow Autonomous Space is an autonomous social centre that provides space for groups working to fight capitalism and other forms of oppression

DONATE: https://linktr.ee/glasgowautonomousspace It was a daunting prospect! A huge, cold and cavernous space. Over the last few years, with the help of hundreds of different people, we have converted into the space it is today—an ever changing, ever

growing, social centre full of established groups and endless opportunities for new and exciting things! We have built a library, herbal clinic dispensary, kitchen, wood workshop, print workshop, meeting space, toilets, a garden with a greenhouse and a shed. You can book GAS by checking to see when the calendar is free and dropping us and email to say when you would like it and what for. GAS was built for groups fighting oppression and prioritises the groups that don't have access to other spaces.
If you are interested in using GAS, don't be shy—give it a try! Who can book GAS? GAS was set up to be a free space for the activist community in Glasgow. Anyone engaged in work to fight capitalism or other forms of oppression can book GAS. How much is GAS to book? GAS is free to use for grass roots groups. These groups always have priority in the space. Registered charities with funding, universities, arts organisations or other formal organisations are asked to make a donation towards running costs of GAS to support other users. We suggest a donation of £50 to £100. When is GAS available to book? View our public calendar to see what dates are available. There are a variety of spaces available so it is possible to have multiple groups meeting in the space simultaneously. Block bookings are possible. All evening events must be finished by 1am at the absolute latest, including clean up. What are the opening hours? Gas is only open for specific events and does not have regular opening hours. Check the calendar for more details of events and follow our social media accounts for upcoming events. How do I get in touch with GAS? Email [email protected] for all bookings and enquiries. Please do not contact individual crew members to book events or ask questions about GAS as decisions are dealt with collectively. What do I need to know if I book GAS? GAS is a space where people can run their own self-sufficient events and doesn't offer support for events, although we'll be around to chat logistics via email. When you book GAS you will be provided with the Space Hire Agreement which details all of the information you need to know to run your event. How do I get in touch in an emergency? In case of emergency please contact us on Facebook messenger
Are dogs allowed? Guide dogs and service dogs are always welcome. Companion dogs are only allowed in the space if all users are comfortable with dogs. Please check with everyone in the space how they feel about dogs before you bring yours in and always keep it on a lead as there is rat poison in the space. Will you promote my event? If you make us a co-host on facebook we will share your event with our followers. If you provide us with a blurb about your event we can share it in our (unregular) newsletter.

Evening events
Can GAS host my touring band? No sorry GAS does not ‘put on’ gigs. Please do not contact us asking if your band can play at GAS unless it is specifically political, platforms people who are not cis white men and you are up for playing one of our fundraisers. Spite house are promoters who put on gigs at GAS who aim to give a platform to under-represented voices in DIY music so you can get in touch with them If you fit their bill. Can I run a gig / club night at GAS? We are not currently supporting any future club nights or parties or late night events outside of the core GAS fundraising parties. This is due to our licensing, sustainability of the space for other users and problems with inclusion at these events. Can I run an evening fundraiser at GAS? You can run an evening events such as talks, film showing, dinners, acoustic music nights etc. We are no longer hosting external fundraising parties that resemble club nights / DJ nights but we consider celebrations / fundraisers / dancing events on a case-by-case basis. We have a curfew of 1am. Does GAS have an alcohol License? All events must be BYOB. Do you have a sound system we can use? No we do not have a sound system for public use. We do have a very simple set of PA speakers. We do not have any mics / mic stands/ drums / amps for you to use unfortunately. We cannot provide support for working them. GAS structure
Who works at GAS? Nobody is paid to work at GAS in any capacity apart from particularly skilled or legal trade requirements, such as the electrician and the people who dispose of our rubbish. We cover expenses of performers at our fundraisers. How is GAS run? GAS is run by a ‘crew’ of people. The following roles are split amongst the crew: Buildings and Utilities (the Jannies), Bookings, Finance, Funding, Fundraisers, Social media, Intersectionality, Saferspaces. We are currently trialling the rotation of these roles every 6 months. We meet on the second Thursday of the month at GAS, at 6.30pm. We communicate via slack and whatsapp. How can I get involved in running GAS? If you would like to join the crew please come along on a Tuesday evening and meet us and introduce yourself and let someone know you are interested in joining the crew. If this is not possible for you then please drop us an email and we can discuss how to get involved. How is GAS Funded? GAS is funded by individual donations made by supporters via our fundraising parties and our patreon page. Our collectives make ad hoc donations when they can.We have previously received funding from LUSH, the Edge fund and the initial build was funded by a generous personal donation from a previous GAS crew member. It is a founding principle of GAS that we do not accept funding from sources that are incompatible with our mission. How much money does GAS have? Currently (April 2019) we have £2000 in our bank account. We aim to always have 3 months of contingency costs in our banks account, which comes to approximately £4000. Our monthly expenses come to £1322. This breaks down as follows: rent £600, bills £460, waste disposal £100, public liability insurance £22, cleaning materials £20, Tuesday social food £80, building insurance £40
Can GAS help me fundraise for my cause? GAS may be able to provide space for you to run a fundraiser but we cannot provide money for projects or collectives. Safety at GAS
Does GAS have a health a safety policy? It is updated regularly and available here. Please contact us with any concern on the email at [email protected]
Does GAS have insurance? We have public liability insurance. We recommend that all groups meeting have their own insurance as our does not cover your liability for activities. Are children welcome at GAS? Children are welcome at GAS. We recommend all children are looked after by an adult at all time in GAS. We offer childcare at many of our events and encourage groups using the space to do the same. Please read our child protection policy here. What to do if something happens at GAS? We have a GAS agreement which all event organisers are responsible for upholding. Please read it here. If this agreement is broken, we have an agreement working group who run our safer spaces policy. You can read the policy here and report any concerns confidentially to [email protected]
Inclusion and Accessibility
Is GAS accessible? Please read our Accessibility Page
What does GAS do to make sure it is inclusive? We are currently working on inclusion caucus statements
The workshops
Can I use GAS workshops to build a personal project? No sorry the workshops are only to be used by groups fighting capitalism or other forms of oppression. If you have a creative project that fits with this aim then you can discuss your ideas with us. Can I use the print workshop / library / bike tools / garden ? If you would like to use one of these spaces you will need to contact the collectives that run them.

🏳️‍⚧️Crafty hands at our Q***r Craft Club🏳️‍🌈

🚶It’s been wonderful to see the club find its stride! We’ve been lucky to have a variety of different crafts at the club, here you can see knitting, embroidery and dot work, but we’ve also had painting, drawing, collage, felting, crochet and beadwork 🧑‍🎨

🧶The past couple weeks I’ve been teaching knitting to some attendees- I love passing on this passion of mine🤭

🚶Moving forwards, we hope to host a series of free workshops, is there anything you would like to see? 🤔
