Last week we had the privilege of hearing from Taysir, a producer with Zaytoun, at an event hosted by Hadeel Palestinian Shop & Palcrafts Charity and One World Shop as part of Fairtrade Fortnight Fairtrade Foundation.

🌱🤲Taysir brought with him a message of hope from farming communities in Palestine.

Despite the challenges his community faces every day, he is determined to make life better for future generations.

⚖ He reminded us that Fair Trade is about fairness wherever people are in the world, and especially in places like Palestine, where agriculture is a lifeline for so many families.

Taysir spoke honestly about the realities of life for Palestinian farmers, where insecurity and uncertainty have become part of daily life.

🍉🇵🇸 He also asked that as well as promoting and buying Zaytoun products, we all stand alongside Palestinian communities in their call for the same justice and fairness that people seek everywhere.

💸 Making changes to our individual spending habits is all well and good, but what about Public Spending habits?

💡The Scottish public sector spends more than £17 billion each year on goods and services. With a big budget comes bigger responsibility!

📢Launching this week to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight, our new Procure with Purpose campaign asks public procurement officers to consider Fair Trade principles in their contracts, so that public funds are spent in ways that promote fair pay, worker rights and greater transparency within supply chains.

🫵We're calling on YOU, our campaigners, to help make this case to your local councils, starting with an accessible everyday change: switching to Fair Trade tea.

🌍Fairtrade Fortnight kicks off TODAY, running from 21st September until 4th October!

Led by the Fairtrade Foundation Fairtrade Foundation, this annual campaign is designed to raise awareness and encourage public support for Fairtrade.

At Scottish Fair Trade, we're thinking about how we can challenge widespread injustice in global trade systems, and the power we have as individuals and organisations to do challenge that system through the choices we make as consumers and the actions we take as a community of campaigners.

With that in mind, here's some events our members are putting on across Scotland over the next couple of weeks – find something near you and show your support!

🌟 Last week we joined a celebration event at University of Glasgow marking another successful year of the 'Find A Solution' programme which connects University of Glasgow students with local third sector, community-based organisations to develop impactful projects through paid internships. 

We were lucky to have Millie MacBean join us through the programme as our Policy Intern. With a broad academic background spanning law, human rights and international politics, Millie has a particular interest in business and human rights, corporate accountability, and ethical global supply chains. 

During her time with us, Millie has developed the Scottish Framework on Responsible Business Conduct and Ethical Supply Chains.

🎉We are delighted to welcome Tabitha Nyariki into her new role as Chair of our board of trustees!🎉

Tabitha is a Glasgow-based advocate for racial equality in education. Previously a student leader promoting diversity, she now tackles racial issues in higher education through her work at Glasgow Caledonian University. Tabitha is also recognised for her work championing child literacy through her Kenyan NGO, Kosi Africa.

At our recent AGM, Kat Ramsay from Aberdeen City Council was also appointed as a new member of the board; and our former Chair, Charles Sim has now stepped into the role of Vice Chair.

Tabitha shared the following statement:

"In 2019, I joined the Scottish Fair Trade as their Communications & Engagement Intern. Seven years later, I’m incredibly proud and humbled to share that I have been elected to be the Chair of the Board"

I’ve grown so much through this movement, learning from producers, campaigners, colleagues and communities who remind me why Fair Trade matters.

There’s lots to do, but I’m excited for what’s ahead and proud to continue playing my part in a movement I care so deeply about.

And of course, to my predecessor, Charles Sim: I have big shoes to fill, but I’m so glad you’ll still be around the table to share your wisdom, passion and charm."

🎉A music festival with inclusion at it's heart, Voice Fest is organised with an emphasis on Fair Trade and sustainability; treating guests and performers with fairness and respect, sourcing Fair Trade and locally and minimising waste.

Two of our trustees Karena and Margaret Anne went along to the launch event on Friday at Brechin Cathedral, enjoying an evening of live choir, pipes and storytelling.
