Open until 14 June, the Royal Scottish Academy’s 200th anniversary exhibition brings together over 450 visual artists across a multitude of disciplines in celebration of the institute’s second centenary.

Among those featured in the landmark exhibition are printmaker Elspeth Lamb RSA (based at South Block), linocut maker Ade Adesina RSA (based at Langstane Place), painter Helen Flockhart RSA (based at The Briggait) and printmaker Leena Nammari RSA (based at Patriothall) and many more artists based at Wasps' buildings across Scotland.

The 200th edition of the Annual Exhibition is a melting pot of contemporary art from across Scotland and further afield, with all artworks shown side by side in the Academy’s grand Neoclassical galleries in the heart of Edinburgh.

The exhibition is free to visit now at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.

Apply now to Visual Arts Scotland's new open call to exhibit at 'Strata', an upcoming summer showcase at Inverness Creative Academy of work that explores landscape through layering, material and time.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 31 May.

The exhibition builds on VAS’ recent programme exploring contemporary relationships to landscape and is delivered in partnership with Wasps, whose Inverness Creative Academy provides a vital platform for artists working in the Highlands and beyond. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to supporting artists across Scotland and creating opportunities for engagement outside the Central Belt.

'Strata' brings this approach into focus: a locally situated exhibition with national reach, foregrounding material practice while opening new pathways for artists and audiences in the Highlands.

Celebrating our spaces: Inverness Creative Academy

Inverness Creative Academy is the Highlands’ first major creative hub. Originally the Inverness Royal Academy building (from 1895 until 1980), Wasps restored the location to provide working accommodation for artists and makers, creative industries, social enterprises and charities.

Previously a medical pracitioner and opthalmic surgeon, Ian is now a figurative artist with a studio at Inverness Creative Academy. He said of his time here:

'I’ve been an artist renting studio space since the building reopened, and in that time I’ve watched it grow into a vibrant, thriving creative community. It’s not only a hub for tenants, but a welcoming space for art students, workshop participants, and the wider public, offering access to exhibitions and working studios alike.

Working alongside such passionate and talented artists in a beautifully managed environment - with its airy, thoughtfully designed space - has been both inspiring and transformative. ICA has supported my development in meaningful ways, giving me the freedom to grow as an artist and the opportunity to exhibit my work in what is undoubtedly one of the finest exhibition spaces in the Highlands, if not all of Scotland.'

Thank you to Ian for sharing your perspective on working at Inverness Creative Academy.

Coming up at Patriothall: 'The Alchemy of Spring: Plants Painted with Plants' by Libby Mitchell
Opening on Friday 8 May, 6pm–8pm
8–24 May, open on Fridays and Saturdays

This exhibition explores the expressive possibilities of painting with handmade natural inks and watercolours – materials derived from plants, minerals, and organic matter that carry both visual and ecological narratives. Each work is created using pigments extracted through slow, experimental processes, where Libby engages directly with the environment as both source and collaborator.

Libby Mitchell is a multidisciplinary artist with a studio at Riverside House in Edinburgh. Having completed an Advanced Diploma of Visual Art in Melbourne, Australia, she has since travelled New Zealand as a landscape artist, taking inspiration for her Art from the bush and her time working as a landscaper in Northland.

Sustainability is not an aesthetic choice but a guiding principle. By rejecting mass-produced materials and minimising environmental impact, Libby challenges conventional art practices and invites a reconsideration of how art is made. Their process is intentionally slow and labour-intensive, emphasising care, patience, and a reconnection with natural cycles.

Celebrating our spaces: The Steeple, Newburgh ⛪

Wasps renovated the former Town Hall, Town House and Corn Exchange in 2008, to provide eight studios spaces and a project/events space. Based there is Gavin Burnett, a ceramicist specialising in porcelain. He said of working at The Steeple:

‘Over the years, I have worked in several studios across North Fife, but my current space at The Steeple offers an ideal combination of scale, accessibility, and comfort. Since 2019, I have been based in a ground floor studio featuring floor to ceiling windows and direct access to an outdoor courtyard. This purpose built environment supports the full scope of my practice, where I create each piece individually using both wheel throwing and slip casting techniques.

Within the studio, I produce my own plaster moulds, glazes and coloured porcelain slips, while all carving and kiln firings are also carried out on site. The dedicated nature of the space enables me to focus fully on the design, making, and refinement of my work, while also allowing uninterrupted time to prepare for forthcoming exhibitions, commissions and design markets’.

Thank you to Gavin for sharing his experience of his studio space at The Steeple.

Thank you to all of the fantastic artists based at The Courtyard in Irvine for taking part in this short film to talk about their studio practice, what they are working on, and what a space with Wasps means to them.

The Courtyard is one of Wasps' smaller buildings, serving a tight-knit group of 18 artists in total, some with spaces there for decades, and some still settling in after just a couple of years. Among them are painters, silversmithers, ceramicists and multimedia artists.

Artists featured are: Becky of The Ayrshire Pottery, Graham McKean, Alison Thomas, Robert Livingstone, May Byrne, Kelly of Hegri Studio, Tracy Scott, May Byrne, Emma Milligan, Keith Salmon and Brian Craig.
