SKIP stands for Students for Kids International Project! We’re a student led charity which aims to promote healthcare. Much of the work we do involves health education in schools and communities.
From 2006 to 2012 SKIP worked at an orphanage near Lilongwe teaching good healthcare and trying to implement sustainable projects to successfully help the children at these centres. In 2013 SKIP embarked on a new project working with an organization called Nancholi Youth organisation (NAYO) based in Nancholi near Blantyre. NAYO works primarily with youth in the town to try and promote the education of sexual health and general health, providing a clinic where members of the community can receive free healthcare and advice. This is particularly appreciated by young mothers and those living with HIV. The poverty in this area is high and many people would not be able to receive this without NAYO’s help. NAYO also provides a safe place for young people to discuss issues and concerns they might have. This might be related to worries about money, education or their relationships. NAYO do fantastic work in the community and SKIP volunteers work with the staff to get involved in several of these projects as well as setting up some of our own within the community. SKIP sends out volunteers over summer where each team stays in Malawi for 5 weeks with a 1 week overlap between teams. Volunteers can however choose to stay longer. Recruitment for project opens at the end of October after our information night where anyone who is interested can come along and get some more information on what the trip involves, costs, flights etc
All students attending the University of Glasgow are welcome to apply, all you need to do is drop us an email and we shall send you an application form to complete. There will then be a short informal interview with a few members of the committee. Volunteering with SKIP is a fantastic opportunity. If you are interested then please like the page, come along to our information night in October and we'll see you there :) if you have any questions or want to know more then email us at [email protected].
