Mike Fenwick ... The State Pension?

An article in The Herald starts: John Swinney pension claim explained as triple lock row grows.

The Triple Lock position is a "Now" issue, but what of the future? This is an edit of what I posted in response to the Herald article.

It is 60 years since the concept of the working population paying an income for those retired using national insurance contributions.

Over that period the demographics have altered significantly and it looks likely that those retired will continue to live far longer than those in earlier years, whilst the indications are that the numbers in the working population will decrease.

We currently speculate, but do not know, how much deep impact AI will cause, and how it will also alter the numbers employed in the future.

The above factors all indicate that a complete re-think of the current system may prove necessary for the future.

Mike Fenwick ... Not a post in The National this time, but now appearing in The Herald, as below:

Herald: Are Andy Burnham's Brexit remarks a watershed moment?

Me: Iceland recently held the first of two potential referendums on whether to join the EU, and leave EFTA and the EEA - but of importance was the fact that it was a Referendum in two distinct parts.

The first was to establish the terms that the EU would offer and once the finer details were known and made publicly available, only then would the second Referendum take place with a binary choice on whether to proceed or not. It never got to that second stage, a majority decided to remain in EFTA and the EEA.

There is, I suggest, a lesson for Scotland in how Icelanders reached their conclusions - and on both parts.

In a later Stage of the Declaration initiative, I will choose a part of the MSM to announce what I believe will be a breakthrough over Scotland regaining its independence. This is me testing the water, and the testing will also include broadcasters such as Channel 4, with whom I have worked in the past.
