Making Campaigns Count: The Science of Effective Activism
What separates a campaign that changes the world from one that fades into obscurity? In this episode, Fiona and Marlene are joined by returning guest Dr Craig Dalzell from the think tank Commonweal to explore the research-backed principles of effective activism and civil resistance.
Drawing on the groundbreaking work of academics like Erica Chenoweth and Gene Sharp, we dive deep into what actually works—and what doesn't—when organizing for change. Why do some campaigns achieve their goals while others struggle to gain traction? What's the difference between activism that captures hearts and minds versus campaigns that peter out?
In this episode, we:
Examine planning and organizing methods used by successful movements, what they did right and where campaigns went wrong. We also explore the powerful potential of civil resistance and strategic disobedience and discover how to sharpen our campaigning focus for maximum impact.

Mike Fenwick ...
The word “CONSENT” appears twice in the Declaration of a Sovereign Scot. Have you ever wondered why I used that word, and whether it was important? Before I explain, let me ask you a question.

In 1707 were the people of Scotland asked to give their “consent” to the Treaty of Union?

In fact, let me ask you another question.

Have the people of Scotland - EVER - been asked if they “consent” to the Treaty of Union?

Have you – been asked - ever?

Well, yes you have - the minute the Declaration of a Sovereign Scot initiative appeared, and you were invited to add your signature to it.

Sovereign Scots from all over Scotland have signed to this - in writing with their signature - and for the world to know!:

Exercising my Claim Of Right as a Sovereign Scot, I declare:

I do not CONSENT to the terms of, nor the continuation of, the Treaty of Union established through the Acts of Union in 1707.

Maybe – for the first time in Scotland's history since 1707 – we have the means to end the Union. BUT ...

But it's up to you to sign and withdraw your consent – something that has never happened before.

******************

Why may it be important? Let's look at the International Court of Justice. I'll keep this very simple – is that one word "consent" legally important at that level?

CONSENT - is the legal permission a state gives allowing the ICJ to hear a case involving it. Without that permission, the Court cannot compel a state to appear.

If you want to dig further google – Consent as it applies to “Consensual Jurisdiction” and the difference between Scots and English Law.

Mike Fenwick ... 2014, and a piece of paper but when, just precisely when, will we see yer likes again? You ever ask that?

Take every thing you know about the struggle for independence over many many years, all the ideas, the political parties, the activists, the rivalries, the marches and rallies, all the speeches, the fall-outs within the Yes movement, think of everything you have seen and witnessed over the years - and then realise a very simple truth.

Regaining Scotland's independence involves a piece of paper and the numbers involved.

In 2014, the piece of paper involved a question, and the numbers went against us.

In 2020, I decided we needed an alternative piece of paper, not one with a question, but one with an answer.

The two main paragraphs in the Declaration of a Sovereign Scot are an answer, and over the past 5 years, the number of Scots who are declaring that very answer, and ensuring the world knows has grown into thousands and thousands. These two paragraphs:

Exercising my Claim Of Right as a Sovereign Scot, I declare:

I do not consent to the terms of, nor the continuation of, the Treaty of Union established through the Acts of Union in 1707.

I do not consent to the terms of, nor the continuation of, the Scotland Act 1998, and all subsequent relevant Acts of like nature and purpose.

******************

If you have ever been asked "What do you want?" and replied "Independence!" and then been asked "When?" and answered "Now!

There is a piece of paper, named the Declaration of a Sovereign Scot, just waiting for your signature.

Mike Fenwick ...
Excellent article in The National from the Scottish Currency Group. These are two extracts:

"The exchange rate of any currency is ultimately a reflection of the productive capacity of the economy.

The top priority, then, is to manage the economy with a national development strategy designed to build productive capacity, especially in the essentials such as food, energy and vital materials for manufacturing, such as steel, aluminium, timber etc."

An obvious example of that thinking is when oil refining at Grangemouth was lost and transferred to refineries south of the border, it is easy to see who were the losers and who were the winners - it also created its effects on employment, but what maybe was less easy to follow through on is the effect on an eventual Scottish currency in terms of what was being produced, where, and by whom.

SHOCKING TRUTH: FOREIGN POP-STARS MORE INTERESTED IN SCOTTISH OIL THAN SCOTTISH DEMOCRACY

It’s good to see anyone including English pop stars passionate about environmental issues concerning Scottish oil.

If only the same people were concerned about Scottish democracy and their country blocking democratic mandates. Maybe it’s because they simply don’t know; can’t grasp the importance of democracy for Scottish people who fell they are being shafted again by the English; or could be they simply don’t give a s**t or they are are just basically patronising English unionists. Take your pick.

Aye, jolly good. Thanks for telling us eh. Not that you care.
