Aberdeen. Followed down the street.

A man followed a young Muslim woman down the street, shouting slurs in her ear. “Go home. Islam is a false religion. You should kill yourself.” She stopped and filmed him so he could not deny it. Further on she found a police officer and told them straight away, but they were too busy with a protest to help. So the man crossed back over and started again, telling her to “go back where she came from.” She was born and raised in Scotland.

This is a real report, made to reporthate.scot on 18 April 2026. The whole street watched. She told the police twice and no one stepped in, so she reported it herself, anonymously, because she feared nothing would be done otherwise.

Being made to feel unsafe and humiliated in your own city is not something you have to accept. Reporting it puts it on the record.

Said or typed, it’s still hate.

Hate does not become acceptable just because it was typed and not said. Abuse you receive online is every bit as serious as abuse to your face, and it can be just as harmful.

If hate has been aimed at you online, you can report it at reporthate.scot. When you tell us what happened, simply select “online” as where it took place.

You can report anonymously if you prefer, in the language that suits you.

A woman was walking along Princes Street when a group of teenagers came towards her. As she stepped aside, one of them leaned in and blew right into her face as he passed. On her own, outnumbered, she felt helpless. “It left me emotional.”

Everyone in Scotland has the right to feel safe and to belong, whoever they are and whatever they believe. Hate targeted at someone because of their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, transgender identity, age or any other protected characteristic has no place here.

Two tourists were overheard talking loudly on a city centre street. “It’s always Indians who...” A derogatory, racially motivated comment, dropped into conversation as if it was just an ordinary thing to say.

Glasgow. Nine years old, held there.

A father reports that his nine-year-old son was playing outside when a group of boys surrounded him and tried to provoke a fight. His friend managed to run home, but the group would not let his son leave. He has a health condition that affects his ability to walk quickly, so he could not move away. He was pushed to the ground, laughed at, and subjected to racist abuse, including being told to “go back where you came from.”

The family contacted the police immediately and were told an officer would be in touch. Four days passed with no contact. In that time his son, already deeply traumatised, became unwell and was admitted to hospital. A card was later left at the door saying an officer had tried to call, while the family was at the hospital caring for him.

This is a real report, made to reporthate.scot in July 2026. A vulnerable child was targeted, assaulted and racially abused, and it took almost a week for any follow-up. He is now frightened to go outside and no longer feels safe in his own community.

Reporting it is how we show how often this really happens, and how much it costs the people it happens to.

Glasgow. Ashton Lane, after an exam.

A young student had just walked out of one of her final exams and was cutting through Ashton Lane. A man stopped and yelled at her to “f* off,” over and over. She got away quickly, in case he turned violent. She wears the hijab, a visibly young Muslim woman. It left her startled and emotional for days.

This is a real report, made to reporthate.scot on 30 April 2026. It takes seconds to shout. The effect lasts far longer, following you home, into the next day and the one after.

A young woman, visibly Muslim, was walking on her own side of a narrow two-way pavement when a man crossed over, stopped dead in front of her, and started shouting and cursing, pointing for her to get out of his way and onto the wrong side. She walked away fast, in case he followed, or turned violent. It was the second time in a month.

July 2026: the month in numbers.

This is our first monthly snapshot of what was reported to reporthate.scot. In July we received 45 reports of hate from across Scotland, a 61% increase on June.

Race or ethnicity (53%) and religion or belief (27%) were the most reported, with Islamophobia the single most common incident type. 84% of reports related to in-person incidents, and 73% of people chose to report anonymously. Reports came from 8 council areas, with Glasgow the most represented.

Every single report was reviewed by a trained, PVG-checked volunteer.

Edinburgh. Pushed in the street.

A 19-year-old, Scottish Pakistani, born and bred here, was walking when a man not much older tried to pick a fight for no reason. He pushed him, tried to spit on him and missed. As he walked away, the man called him a “paki.”

This is a real report, made to reporthate.scot on 23 June 2026. Nineteen years old, in his own country, shoved in the street for nothing he did. Hate does not wait for a reason.
