ADDICTION DOESN’T START WITH DRUGS, IT STARTS WITH WHAT WE IGNORE
Choose life.
Choose not waiting until someone is lying in a hospital bed before we decide they matter.
Choose early signs.
The kid going quiet.
The one acting out.
The one already drifting.
Choose to step in then. Not later.
Choose teachers who are backed, not burdened.
Choose youth workers who are present, not cut.
Choose communities that notice, not ignore.
Choose support before the first arrest.
Choose help before the first overdose.
Choose intervention before dependence has a grip.
Choose a system that stops pretending this starts with drugs.
Because it doesn’t.
It starts long before that.
Choose to ask better questions.
Not “how did they end up like this?”
But “where were we when they needed us most?”
Choose to build something better.
Not tougher. Not louder.
Just earlier. Smarter. Human.
Choose life.
At the point where it can still be changed.

SIMPLE COMMON SENSE - Unless you have a vested interest in the status quo.

The charges I face should not exist. I considered taking this matter to a jury trial to challenge the very basis of these offences, because I believe our current approach to drug policy is fundamentally wrong.
What we have created through prohibition is not safety, but harm. It is a catastrophe of policy that continues to damage individuals and communities, while empowering criminal networks.

But I stand by this: the law in this area is failing. It is not protecting people. It is not reducing harm. And until we have the courage to confront that reality, we will continue to see the same outcomes.

For the next seven weeks, I will be standing as a List Candidate for the Alliance for Scottish Independence.

During this period, I will be stepping back from LEAP activity, as LEAP remains strictly apolitical.

My personal decision to stand is based on a long-held belief that Scotland should have greater control over its own policies. In my view, that would allow for more effective, evidence-based approaches to drug law and the opportunity to treat people with understanding and compassion rather than punishment and stigma.

LEAP’s work continues unchanged and remains independent of any political party or campaign.

Prohibition appeals to politicians because it is lazy politics. The rhetoric is simple and it has always been a reliable vote grabber. Clamp down. Take it off the market. Ban it completely. These are familiar phrases that sound decisive but often mean little more than pushing something into an illegal black market.

Demand rarely disappears simply because something is banned. What usually happens instead is that supply moves underground and the people willing to operate outside the law step in to fill the gap.

I remember a small but perfect example from my own teenage years. When Monty Python and the Holy Grail was banned by Glasgow City Council, it didn't stop anyone from seeing it. All it did was send us outside the city boundary to watch it.

In fact, the ban achieved the exact opposite of what was intended. The moment it was prohibited it became a must-see film. The ban itself turned it into the best possible advertisement.

That is the strange logic of prohibition. Ban something and you often make it more desirable. 'Just Say No'?

No doubt there will be politicians trying to put a positive spin on this national disgrace or turn it into a political football. The same ones that need to make the decisions that could do something about it. They have all been informed of the solutions, now they need to act on that information.

The number of drug deaths is expected to have dropped slightly, but experts warn that any fall will most likely be a blip.
