Flexible working doesn't just mean working from home.

In practice, it can take many different forms - from small changes to start times, to how hours are structured, to where work happens.

If you're not sure what flexibility could look like in your role or organisation, you're not alone.

We've pulled together some practical examples to show how flexible working can work in different ways and why it isn't a one-size-fits-all approach.

82% of workers in Scotland either have flexible working or want it. That’s a significant majority of the workforce.

For employers, it’s a reminder that flexibility isn’t a niche benefit, it’s something most people are actively looking for when considering a role.

If flexible working isn't part of how roles are designed or communicated, there’s a risk of missing out on a large pool of potential candidates. Offering flexibility can be a game-changer for recruitment and retention. And it doesn’t always require big changes - small, practical adjustments can make a real difference. Giving people more input into rotas, making shift swaps easier or offering flexibility around start and finish times can all have a meaningful impact.

Join Nikki, our Co-Founder & Director, and Sunna from Future Proof Learning for an open and honest conversation about what flexible working looks like in practice. They'll be discussing how organisations can better support working mothers while building workplaces that work for everyone.

Together they will explore:
âś…What good flexible working can look like day to day
âś…Where organisations can unintentionally fall short
âś…The realities many working mothers navigate at work
âś…Brief intro to Back in Business: Mum Edition - a programme designed to support mothers returning to work with confidence
âś…Practical next steps for employers wanting to improve their approach

We’ll also hear from a guest speaker who works flexibly and has taken part in the Back in Business: Mum Edition programme.

With the Scottish election now behind us and a new Parliament taking shape, attention turns to the decisions that will influence how we work in the years ahead.

Flexible working has a role to play in that conversation - from helping employers attract and retain people, to supporting parents, carers and those currently excluded from the labour market.

That’s why we published our flexible working manifesto, setting out practical actions we believe could help create a fairer, more inclusive and more productive Scotland.

While employment law sits with the UK Government, there’s still a clear role for Scotland in shaping how flexible working is supported and encouraged in practice.

You can read and download the manifesto here:

If you're already offering some form of flexible working, but want to make it work more consistently in practice, our Flexible Workplace Accelerator is designed to support that.

It’s a practical, supported process - giving you the space to step back, understand what’s working, and build a clear plan for what comes next.

Through the Accelerator, you’ll:
âś…develop a clear, tailored action plan
âś…access practical tools and real-world examples
âś…get ongoing support to work through challenges
âś…connect with other employers sharing similar experiences
âś…build towards Flexible Workplace Accreditation

We lead the process throughout, keeping it focused, manageable and grounded in what works in practice.

If flexible working is on your agenda this year, this could be a useful next step.

Flexible working is rarely just about policy.

More often, it comes down to how work actually works day to day - conversations with managers, trust, expectations and whether people feel able to ask for what they need.

Nikki will be joining Future Proof Learning for this upcoming online conversation exploring what flexible working looks like in practice, using the experiences of working mothers as a lens for wider workplace conversations.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week so we wanted to highlight how much of an impact flexible working can have on staff wellbeing.

Our Flex for Life 2026 research shows that flexible working is closely linked to wellbeing - not as a perk, but as something that helps people stay in work and manage everyday life.

Flexible working isn't one-size-fits-all, but when it works well, people feel the difference.
