Barrhead Children Invited to Try Brass Banding for Free

🎺 NO INSTRUMENT. NO EXPERIENCE. NO COST. 🎺
Could your child be one of the founding members of the new Barrhead Burgh Youth Band?
We are inviting children aged 8 to 14 to join us and discover the fun of making music together. Complete beginners are very welcome—your child does not need to have played an instrument or learned to read music before.
The youth band is a fully inclusive community project, and everything is provided free of charge, including:
🎺 An instrument
🎼 Music and tuition
👕 A band uniform
🏫 Weekly rehearsals
🎶 Concert and performance opportunities
Playing in a brass band can help children build confidence, make new friends and develop concentration, teamwork and communication skills. Most importantly, it gives them the chance to have fun and feel part of something special.
Musical Director Alan Friel said:
“Brass banding is about much more than simply learning to play the notes. It can help young people develop confidence, concentration, teamwork and self-discipline, while giving them a real sense of friendship and belonging.
“It does not matter whether they have played an instrument before or have never held one—we will help them get started and support them as they progress.”
Band Chairperson Sarah Young added:
“This is an inclusive community project, open to children from every background. We know that the cost of lessons, instruments, uniforms and music can make it difficult for families to access musical opportunities, which is why there will be no charge to join.
“We hope local families will take advantage of this opportunity and help us build something of which the whole community can be proud.”
📅 Kickstart Weekend: 4–6 September
🕠 Weekly rehearsals: Tuesdays, 5.45–6.45pm
📍 Venue: Bourock Parish Church, Barrhead
👧🧒 Ages: 8–14
🎵 Experience required: None

Resplendent in new uniforms, BBB were delighted to support St Johns Church in Barrhead with a fundraising concert on Friday evening. An excellent, and very appreciative audience enjoyed a fine concert which included music from the cinema as well as new items from our concert repertoire including Starburst, The Rings of Saturn and Also Sprach Zarathustra. Music from the cinema included Born Free, Gonna Fly Now (from 'Rocky') and Pirates of The Caribbean. Special mention to Fiona Henderson and Ian Kilgour (cornet) and Fiona Kennedy (flugelhorn) for their atmospheric contributions to The Rings of Saturn.

Over £700 raised for Church funds and a standing ovation for the band concluded a fine evening of entertainment and music making.
