Over on my Substack I’m writing about my taste of freedom last weekend in Berlin. Hot weather and dancing, and of course a trial run of Manifestos of Motherhood with - we loved it! But sheesh it’s hard being home - my ambivalence is STILL hard to talk / write about 🌦️ 🏊🏻‍♀️ 🪩

*NEW COHORTS!* I’ve put new dates up on my website for Sept/Oct 2026. Tuesdays are for those in the trenches of new motherhood, mothering babies 12 weeks - 2 years. Thursdays are for those getting a bit more sleep, mothering toddlers and children aged 2 - 5. 👆 for all the details.
You don’t need to be a writer to find your voice through this 8-week programme. We all communicate, we all use words. Understanding yourself in your matrescence is - I believe - key to self-compassion and understanding that SO MUCH of what we find hard in modern motherhood is down to systems and structures, not personal or moral failure.

Berlin was hands down one of the best weekends of my life. It’s taken all week to acclimatise back into my role as a mother. Sign up to my Substack for a version of what happened. Probably other versions exist too. Will try to write about what I found so freeing but also confronting and get that out over the weekend. 🍺 ☀️ 🪩 🏊🏻‍♀️

Sitting at Edinburgh airport awaiting my flight to Berlin, chock full of so many FEELINGS!! Feelings, oh my life, I don’t have enough room for them all! 4 nights away from my wildly exhausting amazing family - who am I without them? 💥 😭 😃 💔 💃🏼

Last few days to grab a ticket for MANIFESTOS OF MOTHERHOOD!
This coming Saturday 30 May '26 10:00 - 16:00 with me, writer / creative producer Catrin Kemp and Berlin-based artist Emma Rytoft. A day of creative and life writing, imagining future versions of ourselves and creating artwork to take home: Totems for ourselves, for the mothers we wish to be - without martyrdom, without ignoring our true selves and who we are alongside our roles as mothers.

The main thing I'm planning for next week's MANIFESTOS OF MOTHERHOOD with is using writing as time-travel: the future mothers we might be, how to hold her, how to pave the way for her. But how to choose excerpts and write prompts when they are so many amazing writers and poets creating work about motherhood?! Go high-brow?! Go tragi-comic?! Go full-on metaphor?!

As I age and grow, and my kids expand away from me, I am increasingly aware of yet new and other identities emerging in me (from me?). If I'm lucky, midlife will be a mid-point. New, older - perhaps Elder - selves are emerging.
I bring into my work all the previous selves (kid-Catrin, teenage-raver-Catrin, new-bride Catrin) and current selves (midlife leader / mother / writer). My work takes mothers safely - with grace and acceptance - into understanding themselves more deeply. Writing and journalling are key to this.
This Friday 10am BST / 11am CEST and I will be running a taster session of what MANIFESTOS OF MOTHERHOOD might feel like. Please join us. You'll need a notebook and pen. DMs open for any questions about our work, together or individually.
