The Pipe Factory

The Pipe Factory The Friends of The Pipe Factory CIC was formed in March 2020. We aim to raise £2.4m to make the building openly accessible to all.

In spring 2021 we purchased The Pipe Factory and plan to renovate it as a creative community hub in The Barras, Glasgow. If you wish to hire our spaces, please contact [email protected]

It was a brilliant time creating an experimental card catalogue in the sunshine yesterday!

Big discussions on how we describe archives, how we preserve them and what things last 30, 40, 100 (!) years on!

The archive and research circle happens fortnightly on Tuesdays. The next one will be the 12th May 5-8. If you’re need any further information simply email [email protected]

The archives programme and preservation work of the pipes and The Pipe Factory is generously funded by and

Join us on Thursday, March 12th for Our New Future: Redefining Risk, Regeneration and Resilience

Hosted by New Future Construction School, in collaboration with Friends of the Pipe Factory, Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance (STBA), and the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP), this panel discussion asks a critical question:
How can Scotland’s built environment move beyond Net Zero to build a future that works for people, places, and the planet — and ensure the workforce is equipped to deliver it?

🗓️ Thursday, March 12th
⏰ 5:30-8:30pm
📍Material Source Studio Glasgow (180 W George St, G2 2NR)

The event will examine how climate and environmental risk is currently understood and managed in construction, why existing systems struggle to support innovation and regeneration, and how education and skills must be treated as core infrastructure in the transition to a low-carbon future.

To reserve a spot and for more details, visit our Eventbrite.

Please note that this talk was previously advertised as taking place on March 19th; however, it will now be taking place on March 12th.

Loom Large have been running some brilliant workshops with our groups at Budhill Day Care Centre, the David Cargill Centre and the Golden Club lately.

From heat press table mats to stained glass pieces and painting sessions, everyone has been getting stuck in and the skills are coming on so fast. It has been great to see confidence growing alongside the creativity. 🌺

Big thanks to for continuing to support the work and make it all possible.

The contractor is currently installing timber framing and plywood lining between the floor joists.

The timber lining will allow for a thick layer of Quietex granular mineral chips to be easily poured in between the floor joists, whilst also providing a service zone for underfloor heating to be installed. Once installed, the mineral chips will help to provide sound insulation between the floors.

Historically, buildings of this age would sometimes use ash deafening, a mixture of ash and rubble to provide sound insulation; however, no existing deafening was found between these floors.

We’ve been busy over the past few months, bringing a mix of creative workshops to our participants at Budhill Day Care Centre, The Golden Club in Calton, and the David Cargill Centre.

From natural dye-making to collaborative banners, themed paintings and more, every session has been packed with colour and energy.👩‍🎨

🎄✨We even squeezed in a festive trip to the SECC Christmas Craft Fair for a big dose of winter inspiration✨🎄

A big thanks to for making these workshops possible 💛

The contractor is currently installing the last section of scaffolding on the north elevation of the building. Because of the adjoining roof, this scaffolding needs to be cantilevered off the north elevation. The contractor has installed a temporary steel structure to support the scaffold structure.

Come and explore the many pipes found in and around our beloved factory building. This is a great chance to see how the archive is progressing and how much work still needs to be done. Ask questions, tell stories and sign up for future events.

There will also be a hands-on workshop where you can create your own neverending card as a response. Write a secret message, create a collage or tell a story on a single piece of folding paper.

No need to sign up! Simply just drop in between 12-3!
As always, tea and coffee provided!

The primary steelwork for the new access stair has been successfully installed. This stair replaces the location of the former hoist and timber stair and will serve as the main vertical circulation route within the building. Once completed, it will provide a direct connection to the new main entrance.
