The Pipe Factory

The Friends of The Pipe Factory CIC was formed in March 2020. We aim to raise £2.4m to make the building openly accessible to all.

In spring 2021 we purchased The Pipe Factory and plan to renovate it as a creative community hub in The Barras, Glasgow. If you wish to hire our spaces, please contact [email protected]

Doors Open Day: East End film programme

A beautiful film selection curated by Ronja Blight from the University of Glasgow Film Curation course. Featuring 4 short films focusing on the east end history, culture, activism and humour.

The films will be on 12-5 at our location on French Street. Free and open to all!

Get stuck into a mini brick building workshop too while you’re there!

Nice stems!

We are now onto archiving the many broken stems of the pipes. Some big some small. Some with nothing on it and others with clues to their main designs.

If you’d like to get involved and learn some basic cataloging skills come along to the archive and research circle tomorrow! Drop in 5:30-8!

A computer or a smart phone is recommended but no experience necessary!

🚧 Construction Update 🚧

The contractor is currently making arched timber cover plates to install between the window frame and the brick arched openings. These carefully fitted pieces seal any gaps and create a neat, finished junction between the window and the surrounding masonry.

🚧 Construction Update 🚧

The contractor is currently installing sound‑deafening material between the timber floor joists. This consists of a thick layer of dense granular mineral chips known as pugging, which helps reduce noise transmission between floor levels.

On top of the pugging, a layer of fibre insulation is added, followed by a plywood sheet that will later support the underfloor heating system and the timber floorboards. The electrical services are also being installed at this stage, positioned just below the floor joists.

Historically, builders would use a mixture of ash and small stones for sound insulation. This material, known as ash deafening, is commonly found in Victorian buildings.

That is how many pipes we have catalogues so far with our team of volunteers! Using the national pipe arching standard, volunteers have measured and described each pipe to a great level of detail while learning archiving skills along the way!

Another great tour down! 👻

It’s been a busy summer at The Pipe Factory. The retiling of the roof is almost complete, and the new rooflights have now been installed.

The contractor has reused the existing slate roof tiles wherever possible and sourced salvaged matching replacement slate tiles where necessary.

The major preservation and refurbishment of the Pipe Factory is generously funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund Glasgow City Council and Historic Environment Scotland

“The most Barras tour of the Barras…ever!”

We had a blast hosting our first Haunted History tour around the barras. Filled with costumes, techno music, stories of Bible John, hotdogs and karaoke in the Cabin Bar!

Next tour is on the 25th of July. 🔗 in bio and all donations go straight to the locals developing this tour. New stories added everytime!

A week today!

We’ll be hosting our first Barras Haunted History Tour. Meeting at 62 Moncur street and taking a long and spooky route around the stalls in the shadows of The Pipe Factory. Come join us and learn some interesting facts (and fictions), meet some local businesses and hear first-hand stories from locals! A pint 🍺 and some food 🌭 might also be in store!

Tickets for the 11th and 25th are available in our bio.
All tickets are free with an optional donation to go towards the locals who created the tour.
