Why I'm Swimming for the Muhammad Ali Center

Some people leave behind trophies.

Others leave behind a legacy.

Muhammad Ali left the world something much bigger.

He stood up for what he believed in, even when it came at a personal cost. He showed that true strength isn't measured by titles or victories, but by courage, compassion and service to others.

I had the privilege of meeting Muhammad Ali on more than one occasion, and those moments have stayed with me ever since.

What inspired me wasn't just the greatest heavyweight champion of all time.

It was the man.

The kindness.

The humility.

The way he made people feel important.

That is why one of the charities benefiting from my English Channel swim is the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Centre continues his mission by helping young people discover their own greatness through leadership, respect, confidence and service to others.

Those values are the foundation of Shift to Shore.

This journey has never been about swimming 21 miles.

It's about showing that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when they believe in something bigger than themselves.

If my swim inspires just one person to believe in themselves, then every cold morning, every training session and every mile will have been worth it.

Because greatness isn't about being the best.

It's about helping others become their best.

Every Shift. Every Stroke. A Greater Purpose.

Why I'm Swimming for Friends of the Neuro

People often ask why I chose Friends of the Neuro as one of the charities behind my English Channel swim.

The answer is simple.

Because I have seen, first-hand, what neurological illness can do to people's lives.

As a nurse on Ward 205 in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, caring for patients living with some of the most challenging neurological conditions imaginable.

Brain injuries.

Brain and spinal tumours.

Multiple Sclerosis.

Motor Neurone Disease.

Parkinson's disease.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

Every patient had their own story.

Some were beginning the hardest journey of their lives.

Others were learning to rebuild after life changed in an instant.

It taught me that recovery isn't always about finding a cure.

Sometimes it's about preserving dignity, comfort and hope.

That's exactly what Friends of the Neuro does.

They provide the things NHS budgets often can't—specialist mattresses, recliner chairs, shower equipment, communication technology, music therapy, iPads, and countless other extras that make an enormous difference to patients and their families.

As nurses, we could see the impact those small things had every single day.

They weren't luxuries.

They helped people feel human.

When I swim the English Channel, every mile won't just represent a physical challenge.

It will represent every patient I had the privilege to care for.

This swim is for them.

Why MS Ireland?

Every charity connected to the Shift to Shore journey has a reason.

For me, this one is deeply personal.

Over 30 years ago, I lost my mum to Multiple Sclerosis.

As a child, I didn't fully understand what MS was.

I just knew that the woman who should have been full of life slowly had more taken away from her.

It wasn't just a disease.

It changed our family.

It changed our future.

And although more than three decades have passed, there isn't a day when I don't wonder what life might have been like if she had been given more time.

My mum never got to see me become a nurse.

She never saw me qualify as an acupuncturist.

She never saw me earn my black belt.

She never saw me become a father.

And she'll never stand on the shore to watch me attempt to swim the English Channel.

But in many ways...

she'll be with me every single stroke.

Choosing MS Ireland isn't just about raising money.

It's about remembering my mum.

It's about supporting families who are living with the same challenges ours once faced.

It's about hoping that research, care and support continue to improve, so that future families have more time together than we did.

The English Channel is 21 miles.

For me, those miles represent something much greater than a swim.

They are 21 miles of gratitude.

21 miles of remembrance.

21 miles dedicated to someone who shaped my life, even though she left it far too soon.

This swim isn't only for me.

It's for my mum.

And it's for every family whose lives have been touched by Multiple Sclerosis.

❤️

"People often ask if this is about swimming the English Channel. The answer is no.

The Channel is simply the route.

The mission is to leave something behind that helps other people.

If I only swam 21 miles, I'd have completed a challenge.

If together we can raise £100,000, we'll change lives.

That's why Shift to Shore exists."

Slow Is Still Forward

I'm not the fastest swimmer.

I'll probably never be the strongest swimmer either.

But speed has never been my greatest strength.

My strength is showing up.

Getting back in the water when I'm tired.
Training after a 12.5-hour nursing shift.
Swimming when the weather isn't perfect.
Choosing discipline over excuses.

The English Channel doesn't ask how fast you are.

It asks one question:

Can you keep going?

That's where endurance matters.

That's where mindset matters.

That's where believing in yourself matters.

Over the next 58 weeks I'll keep building those three things.

Because I don't need to be the fastest person standing on the shore.

I just need to be the one who refuses to stop until I reach the other side.

Twenty-one miles.

Thousands of strokes.

One purpose.

One promise to myself:

Never give up.

If you're chasing your own goal right now, remember...

You don't have to be the fastest.

You don't have to be the most talented.

You just have to keep moving.

Because slow...
..is still forward.

One Purpose. Many Roles. One Mission.

People often ask me why I wear so many hats.

Nurse.
Acupuncturist.
Martial Artist.
English Channel swimmer.
Silk Road Friendship Ambassador.

The truth is... they're not separate journeys.

Every one of them has taught me something about resilience, discipline, compassion and service.

Shift to Shore was never created because I wanted to swim the English Channel.

It was created because I know what it feels like to hit rock bottom.
To lose direction.
To question your worth.
To wonder if life will ever change.

The Channel Swim is simply the vehicle.

The real mission is much bigger.

To raise £100,000 for charity.
To support causes that have changed lives.
To encourage people to believe that no matter where they are today, their story isn't finished.

Over the next 58 weeks you'll see the reality behind this challenge.

The early mornings.
The long swims.
The setbacks.
The victories.
The people who make it possible.
The lessons learned along the way.

If even one person decides to believe in themselves again because of this journey...

then every mile, every cold swim and every difficult day will have been worth it.

Thank you for following.
Thank you for believing.
And thank you for being part of something much bigger than one person swimming across the English Channel.

Every Shift. Every Stroke. A Greater Purpose.

The Iceberg

People see the medal.
People see the qualification.
People see the clinic.
People see the swim.
People see the photographs and the finish lines.

What they don't see...

The years of wondering if I was good enough.

The bankruptcy.
The setbacks.
The nights I questioned everything.
The shifts that finished exhausted only to train before the next one.
The mornings when the alarm went off and I wanted to stay in bed.
The shoulder pain.
The cold swims.
The sacrifices my family made.
The failures that taught me more than the victories ever did.

People often compare someone else's visible success to their own hidden struggle.

That's a comparison you'll never win.

Every achievement has an iceberg beneath it.

The part everyone applauds is only a small fraction of the journey.

The real story is built underneath the surface, where nobody is watching.

That is where discipline is built.
That is where resilience is built.
That is where purpose is found.

Shift to Shore was never created just to swim the English Channel.

It was created to remind people that your hardest days do not define your future.

Rock bottom can become the strongest foundation you'll ever stand on.

If you're in the middle of your own iceberg right now...
keep showing up.

Nobody may see what you're carrying today.

But one day they'll only see the part above the surface.

And they'll call you lucky.

Every Shift. Every Stroke. Every Step Forward.

Becoming

There was a time when I believed life had already written my story.

Today I know something different.

None of the things lying on these rocks define who I am.

Not the nurse's uniform.

Not the black belt.

Not the graduation cap.

Not even the yellow Channel Swimming Association cap.

They're not destinations.

They're reminders.

Each one represents a moment when I chose to keep going instead of giving up.

People often ask what made me decide to swim the English Channel.

The truth is...

The Channel isn't what changed me.

It was everything that happened before it.

The failures.
The setbacks.
The long nights.
The uncertainty.
The moments when quitting would have been easier.

Looking back, I realise that every challenge was quietly shaping the person I was becoming.

Shift to Shore was never created simply to swim across a stretch of water.

It was created to remind people that no matter where life has taken you, you can still choose where it goes next.

Because becoming isn't about arriving.

It's about having the courage to keep moving forward, even when you can't yet see the shore.
