The end of an era - but not the end of the story?

Today, the pupils of Gartcosh Primary School left the building for the last time before they move to their new home in the Community Hub.
A school is more than bricks and mortar and we’re sure the people who make it what it is will create a very happy new home.

For 113 years, this building has been at the heart of our village - but this doesn't have to be goodbye…

Gartcosh Development Trust has applied to North Lanarkshire Council to bring the old School and Community Hall into community ownership — to become the Gartcosh Links Centre: a hub with a community café, space for children, young people and families, and health & wellbeing services for the whole village. The application is in the Council's hands now (no decision date yet) and we'll share every milestone with you as soon as we hear it.

A wee bit of local nostalgia tonight.

As the barber was putting up a new shop sign, I noticed the old sign for Kay's Groceries & Home Bakery hidden underneath.

Does anyone remember Kay's? And more importantly, wouldn't it be fantastic to see a bakery in Garcosh again? 🍞🥧😋

We are exhausted but absolutely thrilled to say that we officially submitted the CAT (Community Asset Transfer) Application for both the school and community hall to NLC this week! 🎉

Comprising a lengthy application form, a full business plan and 9 appendices, the original documentation alone (not including pre-existing accounts, survey data, the Local Place Plan etc.) weighs in at a whopping 376 pages! 😳📚

A huge thank you to the various community groups across Gartcosh for their letters of support, and to the many business owners, individuals and elected representatives who gave their time to participate in meetings and interviews.

We are incredibly grateful to Community Enterprise, Scottish Land Fund, Coalfields Regeneration Trust - Scotland, DTAS, North Lanarkshire Council and Cllr Greg Lennon⁩ for all their help, advice and support in getting us this far. ❤️

Now… we wait! 🤞 First for a validation letter, then a NLC consultation. The committee will sit and we should hopefully have a decision within 6 months.

More progress at Memorial Park! We’re extremely grateful to Mears Group for kindly donating their time and materials to the on-going park project and we can’t wait to have the “Pergola Patio” finished up!
