GalGael and GalGael Community are 2 separate pages. This page represents the views of GalGael Trust. It is different from the GalGael Community page where people will use the page as a discussion forum. If you want to get an overview of GalGael... look at both these pages and also our website on www.galgael.org. Recently we also have another part of our work creating a page... anchor and sail... so lots of information which tries to capture the diversity of our work and also be clear in the different aspects of our work and community involvement. As the tide went out on the shipbuilding history of Govan, many families in the community were left without work and meaning. Modern Govan has been left high and dry by this post-industrial legacy; roots are being lost, values are becoming blurred, and the fast-flowing current of modern life is leaving many behind. At GalGael, we have created a cultural anchor point around which local people are re-kindling skills, community and a sense of purpose. While our boats imaginatively reconnect elder and youth… people and place… urban to rural communities, the insider and the outsider… old ways and new… our past to our future. They serve as a powerful metaphor for transformation - recreating an inspirational folklore for the modern age. This page will act mainly as a feed for current GalGael news and events. But we would also like to encourage everyone who has been involved with us to contribute here, as long as your contribution is related to GalGael. Please feel free to upload pictures, videos, post links and include your thoughts and reflections on time spent at GalGael.

In the winter of 2024/2025, the Galgael community came together to build a pond next to our Snug. The pond was intended as a refuge for wildlife in the garden, and also takes water off the roof of the Snug, helping to reduce localised flooding.

At the beginning of September this year, we were joined by Louise Froglife to take a close look at the life in the pond. We took samples with a net at different depths and were amazed to see a huge diversity of life, and creatures that indicate good water quality like damselfly larvae, daphnia, and freshwater shrimp. Our water snail populations are also thriving (we have at least three species)! No frogs call the pond home yet, but we hope it might happen one day. Witnessing the development of the pond has been wonderful and this was an opportunity to help our community understand the importance and impact of a pond in the garden.

There is a little, orange powerhouse of health growing at the back of Ibrox Commons. Growing in half wh**ky barrels, our three native sea buckthorn shrubs (Hippophae rhamnoides) are now 3 years old and producing a good crop. The orange berries are ripe now but don’t last long, so have a taste while you can. Watch out for the thorns and brace yourself for their tanginess! The berries are packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and omega fatty acids. If you are interested in growing these, be aware that they can spread extremely fast if not grown in containers. Left unmanaged, they can form dense thickets via underground root ‘suckers’.

This coming Tuesday 9 June, GalGael will host a screening of 'For Our Rights', a documentary following young Sámi activists in their struggle to defend their rights, identity and traditional reindeer herding lands.

The film documents their protest after Norway’s Supreme Court ruled that a wind power plant violated Sámi rights — while the turbines remained standing.

The evening will include a short discussion on land, culture, identity, climate justice and Indigenous rights.

Looking forward to our screening of Everybody to Kenmure Street.

In May 2021, people in Pollokshields and from across Glasgow came out onto the street after two men were detained by Home Office immigration officers. Some sat in the road. Others brought food and support. Hundreds stayed together for hours.

The film tells the story of that day — and what can happen when people refuse to leave their neighbours behind.

A lovely gathering for the Spring Equinox at GalGael 🌞

As night and day meet, we celebrated the turning of the seasons, the return of longer days, and the quiet feeling of new beginnings in the air.

Thank you to the chefs, the storytellers, the singers, potwashers, our volunteers and participants — and everyone who came together to share the moment.
