GalGael

GalGael A working community making a stand for compassion, health and justice, standing against violence, loneliness and scarcity. Together we are enough.

GalGael and GalGael Community are 2 separate pages. This page represents the views of GalGael Trust. It is different from the GalGael Community page where people will use the page as a discussion forum. If you want to get an overview of GalGael... look at both these pages and also our website on www.galgael.org. Recently we also have another part of our work creating a facebook p

age... anchor and sail... so lots of information which tries to capture the diversity of our work and also be clear in the different aspects of our work and community involvement. As the tide went out on the shipbuilding history of Govan, many families in the community were left without work and meaning. Modern Govan has been left high and dry by this post-industrial legacy; roots are being lost, values are becoming blurred, and the fast-flowing current of modern life is leaving many behind. At GalGael, we have created a cultural anchor point around which local people are re-kindling skills, community and a sense of purpose. While our boats imaginatively reconnect elder and youth… people and place… urban to rural communities, the insider and the outsider… old ways and new… our past to our future. They serve as a powerful metaphor for transformation - recreating an inspirational folklore for the modern age. This page will act mainly as a feed for current GalGael news and events. But we would also like to encourage everyone who has been involved with us to contribute here, as long as your contribution is related to GalGael. Please feel free to upload pictures, videos, post links and include your thoughts and reflections on time spent at GalGael.

A lovely gathering for the Spring Equinox at GalGael 🌞

As night and day meet, we celebrated the turning of the seasons, the return of longer days, and the quiet feeling of new beginnings in the air.

Thank you to the chefs, the storytellers, the singers, potwashers, our volunteers and participants — and everyone who came together to share the moment.

Solidarity with the Mapuche
Weds 4 March
An event with Cairde Tapajos in solidarity with imprisoned Mapuche activists.

Join us to find out more about the criminalisation and the disappearance of Mapuche activists in Chile and demonstrate support for families of the detained and the Mapuche struggle.

Help raise awareness of the treatment of Jaime Hurnchuňir and Lientur Millacheo - two young activists imprisoned since last November for defying logging and mining projects. And of Julia Chuňil a Mapuche land defender who was disappeared.

INDEXED BEINGS: A film by artist by Helen Knowles made in collaboration with Jorge Contreras, Manuel Mueses and Soraida Chindoy and members of the Inga, Cofán, Siona and Kamëntsá communities of Mocoa, Putumayo.

A dispute unfolds in Piedemonte, Mocoa, (Colombian Amazon): between a scientist and a local taita (shaman) over plants as capable of knowing, acting, and creating their own worlds.

The film will be followed by a conversation with the artist Helen Knowles and film collaborator and participant Soraida Chindoy Buesaquillo. Soraida is an indigenous guardian, mother and activist whose work defends the sacred Putumayo mountains.

See https://linktr.ee/galgael for tickets - pay what you can.
All proceeds cover costs of touring this film.

It's Volunteer Week! An almighty big thank you to all our volunteers. We literally couldn't do this work without you 👏🏽 👏🏽

AND some exciting news 🥁 GalGael have received multi-year support from the National Lottery Community Fund for our project Making Just Futures; community skills for more togetherness and living well in uncertain times.
In the face of participation rates in volunteering halving since 2010; evidence that the cost of living crisis is having significant impact and as more people struggling with mental health are missing out on the associated wellbeing benefits when they need them most* - Making Just Futures sets out to offer more pathways into volunteering and community action, specifically designed to improve mental health, build resilience, and foster mutual support within marginalised Glasgow communities.

See more of this story on our website or read about Making Just Futures.

A HORSE FOR THE APPLEBY FAIR As those who know the meaning of the word 'GalGael' will know - our work is rooted in a respect for traditional cultures worldwide and their struggles for territory or to keep cultural practices alive. A little closer to home the Gypsy and Traveller community have commissioned a sculpture to celebrate the centuries old Appleby Fair - where since late 1700s Gypsies and Travellers from up and down the country came to trade horses - becoming the biggest fair of its kind in the world. While the Fair thrives to this day - if you were to visit Appleby outside of fair week there is no trace of Gypsy and Traveller culture or its relationship to the town.
They received planning permission in principle however not all folk appreciate the value of traditional cultures and some divisive elements are rallying against the Fair being celebrated and so they are asking for voices of support and positive comments on the planning website by 22 March. It takes 2 minutes. Hope you can lend your support. ❤

We have a load of Parana Pine pew seats and ends to shift. They're from a church in Saltcoats which is being closed, and we were offered the salvage.
We're selling them at £15 p/linear metre. The seats are 1 1/2' thick and the ends a whopping 2" thick.
They'd make great tables, worktops, shelves and internal joinery.
We'd prefer to make cash sales, and it would be great if you can phone in advance to let us know when you're coming, on 0141 427 3070. We are open Tuesday - Friday 10 - 4.
