Glasgow Water Vole Project

Glasgow Water Vole Project The Glasgow Water Vole Project is a partnership between the University of Glasgow, Seven Lochs Project, PTES, SNH and Glasgow City Council.

Glasgow, in particular, the east end of the city, is home to a unique population of water voles. As well as the traditional type which lives in wetland areas (e.g Hogganfield Park) there is another type found here which lives in grasslands, sometimes miles away from water. This grassland water vole is very unusual and rarely recorded anywhere else in the UK. The Glasgow Water Vole Project aims to

raise awareness about these special animals at a community and city-wide level and to value the uniqueness of the city's urban biodiversity.

Long grass provides a home for water voles and a home for wildflowers. Meadow Crane's-bill in bloom is a great food source for bumblebees and looks great too.

A good range of water vole field signs at a site near Edinburgh Road yesterday. Active burrows, soil from excavations, feeding signs and latrines. Even some tiny bright orange eggs of butterflies found on wildflowers. A satisfying survey.

National Mammal Week

Want to get involved in water vole conservation in your local area? Help out by telling us where you have seen this important mammal around Glasgow!

Our research team from the University of Glasgow have been out and about surveying water voles across the city over the past few weeks, and they want your help! Have you seen water voles this year? Where? What about water vole signs (burrows, digging, etc)? Share your sightings in the comments and help us better understand our city's unique population.

The data the team is collecting will be used to study where and when water voles are active in Glasgow, helping us identify important green spaces and look after them and the species that live in them 🌿"

🦦 National Mammal Week Spotlight: The Eurasian Otter 🦦

Sleek, curious, and full of character — the Eurasian otter is one of Glasgow’s most iconic and elusive mammals.

This beautiful individual was photographed along the River Kelvin, one of many waterways where otters can be found across the city. Glasgow’s major watercourses provide the perfect habitat for these skilled swimmers, who mainly feed on fish, but will also take the occasional waterbird or amphibian.

Fun fact: otters can swim at speeds of up to 1 metre per second! 🌊

Next time you’re near the water, keep an eye out, you might be lucky enough to spot one of these elusive river residents 👀✨
