💚We are delighted to announce that Amma Birth Companions 💚 has been named Charity of the Year (Large) at the
Scottish Charity Awards 2026 SCVO (Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations)

This award recognises seven years of building compassionate, person centred support for women and families during pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.

Since Amma began, our mission has been simple: to ensure that no woman has to navigate pregnancy, birth or early parenthood alone. Today, thanks to our dedicated staff team, volunteers, partners and supporters, we provide companionship, advocacy and practical support to hundreds of women and families across Glasgow every year.

Many of the women we support are new to Scotland and many are seeking sanctuary. Creating safe, welcoming spaces where families can connect, belong and thrive remains at the heart of everything we do. This recognition also comes at a time when maternity services are under significant pressure, and when many of the women we support face additional barriers to accessing care and support.

We remain committed to advocating for more equitable maternity experiences and ensuring that women’s voices are heard.

We would like to thank the Scottish Charity Awards judges, our supporters, and everyone who has been part of Amma’s journey. This award belongs to our whole community.

Congratulations to all the finalists and winners, and especially to our fellow finalists You and House Multibank.💚

This week, racist violence and intimidation have spread across the UK, including here in Glasgow.

We are sickened by what is happening in our city.

The people responsible are a small minority who do not speak for Glasgow or for Scotland. This is a country where people of all backgrounds live side by side, and where most people believe that individuals and families seeking safety deserve to be welcomed.

Hatred like this is designed to divide us. It wants neighbours to fear each other and communities to turn inwards. We can't let that happen.

To the women and families in our Amma community: we stand with you. Amma will always be a safe and welcoming place where you and your family belong. You are not alone.

And remember, silence isn’t neutral. If you aren't directly affected by these events, speak up when you can and check in on your neighbours and colleagues who may be feeling unsafe. Challenge racism when you witness it. Be an ally in real life, not just online.

Together, we can send a message that hatred has no place here in Glasgow or across the UK.

💚Thank you to members of the Amma community who provided these translations💚

Amma has joined a coalition of 36 healthcare bodies and women's rights organisations writing to Scotland's First Minister to call for the reinstatement of a dedicated Women's Health Minister.

The removal of the role after last month's elections is hard to reconcile with the current state of women's healthcare in Scotland. As the recent Healthcare Improvement Scotland inspection reports have shown, there are mounting pressures and safety concerns within maternity services across Scotland. Women are also experiencing rising waits for gynaecological care, inequitable access to perinatal mental health support, and significant gaps in abortion provision.

There is also longstanding evidence that women experience deep-rooted systemic bias, poorer outcomes, and barriers to care across the health system, all of which disproportionately affect the women we support at Amma.

As it currently stands, responsibility for women's health sits within a broad-reaching portfolio that includes mental wellbeing, public health, sport, alcohol and drugs. We urge the First Minister to reinstate the role and restore the leadership, accountability, and visibility that women's healthcare deserves.

Over the weekend, .scot The Ferret published an investigation into the conditions mothers and babies are living in across Scotland's temporary and asylum accommodation. We contributed to this piece, sharing evidence from our work supporting pregnant women and new mothers in hotels in Glasgow.

Women recovering from birth and caring for newborns deserve conditions that support their health and wellbeing. We see every day what it means when those conditions are not met: mothers exhausted and unable to nourish themselves, babies and children with nowhere to play and nothing to do.

The word 'hotel' is misleading. For most people it suggests comfort, even luxury. The conditions are cramped and wholly inadequate, and whilst a short hotel stay might be manageable, the cumulative impact of living in these conditions long-term is deeply detrimental to the health and wellbeing of mothers and babies. Scotland's Children and Young People's Commissioner has been clear that hotel-type accommodation should only ever be a last resort, for the shortest time possible.

The bodies responsible, including the Home Office and Mears, need to act urgently to address these failings. Every mother wants to provide for her child and give them a safe and secure start in life. But this is a system that withholds the most basic necessities and actively prevents mothers from meeting their children's needs themselves. Every child, regardless of background or immigration status, deserves better.

Amma believes that every parent deserves to feel safe, cared for, and respected, no matter their background, nationality, or circumstances. Our volunteers provide compassionate support to parents facing challenges that no one should face alone.

We are currently recruiting for several volunteer roles:

Birth Companions provide practical and emotional support during pregnancy, labour, birth, and the first days with a new baby.

Postnatal Companions offer home visits, emotional support, and practical help as families adjust to life with a newborn.

Parent Supporters provide the same type of emotional and practical support as birth and postnatal companions, but within a more flexible role.

Full training is provided for all roles.

Applications close on June 12 for training starting in January. Link in bio
