NAoS was pleased be at the Scottish Parliament today, joined by two of our members - Stuart James from Glasgow FND Awareness Support and David Mulligan from Funding Neuro – to meet with Dawn Black MSP, one of our newly elected Neuro Champions.

We had a valuable discussion about the experiences of people living with neurological conditions and the vital role our members play in filling the gaps that exist within the health and social care system. We highlighted challenges in accessing timely and appropriate treatment and support, barriers to research taking place in Scotland, and ongoing inequities in access to clinical trials. We also set out our key priorities for the Scottish Government, as outlined in our manifesto: https://bit.ly/4w078yH

Many thanks to Dawn Black MSP for her time and commitment. We look forward to meeting with more of our Neuro Champions and working in partnership to advocate for people affected by neurological conditions.

This week is PSP and CBD Awareness Week, and NAoS member PSPA have published a report revealing a staggering lack of progress in diagnosing Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD)- both terminal, progressive neurological conditions.

The PSPA survey of 650 patients and family carers identified that diagnosis of PSP & CBD is still critically challenging, causing delays at a time when it matters most. The survey found the core drivers of the challenges experienced, include the confused diagnostic pathway (such as people receiving multiple referrals to different professionals before arriving at neurology) and waiting times to see neurologist once referred. This highlight issues of capacity within services (hence the reliance on people going private to skip the lengthy waits) and the lack of recognition of the underlying condition by GPs.

In addition to diagnosis issues, the survey also highlights a widening gap between the rapidly accelerating needs of people diagnosed and their family carers, and the slow-moving health services designed to support them. Again, this points to capacity issues, but also to a lack of understanding about the conditions and how they progress, and the impact of uncoordinated care.

Read PSPA’s full survey report, 'The experiences of people living with PSP & CBD: Findings from PSPA’s 2025 survey', including a comprehensive list of system recommendations, at https://www.pspassociation.org.uk/pspa-survey-report-2025/

Thank you to Sharon Turnbull from More Than Fibro - SCIO who presented at our Members' Meeting this morning as part of our member showcase*.

Sharon set up More Than Fibro in 2020 to be a safe community of peer support for people living with fibromyalgia. The group has now grown to over 13,500 members and transitioned into being a registered charity in 2021.

More Than Fibro run a range of services including online peer to peer support, in person support meetings, mental health support, an advocacy service, a wellbeing programme, a first of it's kind Hub in Glasgow and much more.

They are also keen to collaborate with other organisations who may be supporting people with fibromyalgia but not know much about the condition.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Members' Meeting this morning. A special thank you to Professor Anna Glasier OBE, Women's Health Champion for Scotland, who joined as our guest speaker.

Professor Glasier outlined how women face a range of unique and unequal health challenges such as:
➡️Women are more likely to live with long-term conditions and spend more of their lives in poor health despite living longer
➡️Poverty causes ill health, drives inequality in health outcomes and increases use of health services. Women, particularly single mothers, are more likely to live in poverty than men.
➡️Women experience the same health problems differently, often facing delays in diagnosis, poorer treatment, and worse outcomes.
➡️Women carry a disproportionate burden of dementia, both as those most affected and as unpaid carers, with emerging evidence linking menopause to mental health and cognitive changes.

Professor Glassier went on to discuss the work of the Women's Health Plan, which aims to achieve equitable health outcomes so that women and girls experience the best possible health across their lives.

The plan is now in phase 2 and will have a focus on brain health and dementia, among other priority areas. You can find out more here: https://www.gov.scot/publications/womens-health-plan-phase-two-2026-2029/.

We are delighted to be joined by the Women’s Health Champion for Scotland, Professor Anna Glasier OBE, at our Members' Meeting next Thursday.

Breaking news: We’ve joined organisations across Scotland in calling for the reinstatement of a dedicated Minister for Women’s Health.

Until recently, women’s health had explicit visibility within the portfolio of the Minister for Public Health and Women's Health. Following a post-election reshuffle, this responsibility has been absorbed into a broader brief under the Minister for Mental Wellbeing, Public Health, Sport, Alcohol and Drugs. We are concerned that without a dedicated focus, the specific challenges facing women’s health risk being deprioritised.

This matters for neurological conditions, where many conditions disproportionately affect women or present differently in women, and where greater awareness, research and tailored support are urgently needed.

Ensuring women’s health has a clear and visible place in government is essential to improving outcomes and ensuring experiences are recognised and addressed.

You can read more in The Herald’s coverage of the open letter here: https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/26176586.john-swinney-warned-axing-womens-health-minister-role/

We are also expecting a First Minister’s Question on this from Green Party Health Spokesperson, Kayleigh Kinross-O’Neill MSP, this afternoon. You can watch live here at approximately 2.30pm: https://www.scottishparliament.tv/

Our Programme Director, Alice Struthers, enjoyed being part of the launch event for Voluntary Health Scotland's new report (IN)VISIBLE Health S*x and Gender Inequalities.

Alice joined Tracey McFall (Scottish Recovery Consortium), Rebecca Hoffman (LGBT Health and Wellbeing), and Sarah Latto (Voluntary Health Scotland) to explore how health, s*x and gender inequalities intersect, and what this means for people living with neurological conditions.

We’re also proud to have contributed to this important report, which shines a light on these often overlooked issues in health and care.
