On April’s fifteenth, the silence fell,
a quiet no words could fill,
as Police Scotland Search Dog Billy
stood down at last…
after years of iron will.
From twenty-fifteen’s first cold call,
through nights where few would go,
he chased the dark, he found the lost,
he followed what we’d never know.
Ten years near of tireless steps,
a life that gave, not took,
with every trail, with every find,
written deep in duty’s book.
Twelve years worn but spirit strong,
no slowing in his stride,
a working heart that never quit,
with courage as his guide.
But endings aren’t just endings here,
not for the ones who serve
for just beyond that rainbow line,
stood a soul with equal nerve.
Police Scotland General Purpose Dog Bodie, his brother, bold, already there,
eight years carved in pride,
bred to protect, born to give,
with fire he could not hide.
At sixteen months he proved his path,
no hesitation, no delay,
he knew his role, he owned his ground,
and never turned away.
Commended for the work he gave,
in trials and streets the same,
from chaos into quiet care,
he answered every name.
A stoic lad, yet soft in soul,
a gentle, steady guide,
who’d face the storm without a flinch,
then sit with those who cried.
But fate can turn without a word,
and take before it’s time,
GDV, so swift, so cruel,
cut short his final climb.
Not far from rest, not far from peace,
yet still his watch was done,
leaving echoes in every step,
of a life so fiercely run.
And now… two years to the very day,
as Billy’s watch came through,
there at the bridge, in fields of light,
stood Bodie, strong and true.
No leads, no calls, no sirens now,
just open ground to roam,
two shadows running side by side,
together… finally home.
To the heart that holds them even now,
through every ache and tear,
they were never “just dogs” in life
they were everything held dear.
And though the nights feel colder still,
and silence lingers long,
just listen close… you’ll hear their paws,
in every place they belong.
Because love like this does not fade out,
it doesn’t drift or bend
it waits beyond the rainbow’s edge…
where partners meet again. 🐾
