Glasgow Care Foundation

Glasgow Care Foundation A small charity doing BIG things for Glasgow! Having neither Welfare State nor a National Health Service, many people lived in poverty.

The Society/Glasgow Care Foundation was established in 1874, when Glasgow was a thriving industrial city with a population of over half a million people. Being aware of the living conditions of the poorest citizens, a committee was formed to establish a charitable organisation to help those most in need. The committee members comprised citizens from the YMCA, various Churches and Christian organis

ations along with City officials, wealthy businessmen and individuals living in the City, with funding coming from these same sources. The objects of the Society/Foundation have always been to assist those in the City of Glasgow, experiencing financial and emotional hardship, working with family case workers, the elderly and sick, supporting individuals and families living in poverty due to unemployment and homelessness. Over the years The Society/Foundation has taken over the administration of smaller Trust Funds. Following advice from our stockbrokers, all funds have been amalgamated and the capital invested, thus providing a regular income. The funds of The Society/Foundation continue to be used towards supporting and improving the lives of those citizens most in need within the City of Glasgow, ensuring the original role of The Society/Foundation is being observed and maintained. The Society/Foundation does not receive any funding from Government sources therefore if you can lend a helping hand please donate via our website.

Glasgow is a city with pride, personality and community spirit, But it is also a city where too many people are struggling.

Behind the statistics are families trying to keep going.
People making impossible choices.
Community groups stepping in because they know the need on their doorstep.
Children growing up in households where the basics are not always guaranteed.

This is why Glasgow Care Foundation exists.

We are here to provide practical support to people and community groups across the city.

Not with judgement. Not with complicated language. Just with the aim of helping where we can.

If you care about Glasgow, supporting Glasgow Care Foundation is one way to help people in this city directly.

If your company is planning a charity ball, awards night or end-of-year event later this year, now is a good time to think about who you want that event to support.

October and November can be busy months for corporate fundraising, but choosing your charity early gives you more time to tell the story properly.

Glasgow Care Foundation supports people, families and communities across Glasgow with practical grants.

Choosing GCF means your fundraising can stay local.

It means your guests can see a clear connection between their support and the city around them.

And it means your event can help us continue supporting people who are facing real financial hardship.

If your company is planning a fundraiser this year, we would love you to consider Glasgow Care Foundation.

When people think about charity support, they often think it has to be complicated.
At Glasgow Care Foundation, our support is practical.

It might help with essential household items.
It might help a family through a difficult period.
It might support a community group doing important work in their local area.

It might make a situation feel less overwhelming for someone who has nowhere else to turn.

We know a grant will not solve every issue connected to poverty in Glasgow.

But we also know that practical help at the right time can make a real difference.

That is why support from individuals, businesses and fundraisers matters so much.

Every donation helps us continue saying yes where we can.

Let’s make this useful.

With costs still high, everyone has their own way of making things stretch a bit further.

What’s one thing you do to make your food shop go further each week?

Could be a go-to meal, a habit, or a simple swap.

Drop it below. It might help someone else more than you realise.

A new month is a chance to think about the kind of city we want Glasgow to be.

For many people across the city, support is needed not because they have done anything wrong, but because life has become too expensive, too difficult or too uncertain.

That is where Glasgow Care Foundation comes in.

We provide practical grants to individuals, families and community groups across Glasgow, helping with essentials that can make day-to-day life feel a little more manageable.

And the truth is, small acts of support really do add up.

A £5 monthly donation might not feel like much on its own.

But when more people choose to give a small amount regularly, it helps us respond to more requests for help and support more people across the city.

If you have ever thought, “I wish I could do more, but I cannot give loads”, please know this.

You do not have to give loads.

You just have to give what you can.

A lot of people ask where the money actually goes when they donate or fundraise.

The answer is simple. It goes directly to helping people with the basics.

A bed for a child who doesn’t have one.
A cooker so a family can prepare meals.
Flooring to turn an empty property into a home.

This is not abstract. It’s immediate, practical support that changes daily life.

Every pound raised helps us say yes to more people when they need it most.

That’s the difference you make.

One of the biggest challenges with poverty in Glasgow is that you often can’t see it.

It doesn’t always look like crisis.
It doesn’t always look like someone asking for help.

More often, it looks like someone managing.

Managing the weekly shop.
Managing rising bills.
Managing with what they have.

Until something changes.

A cooker breaks.
A bill increases.
A situation shifts.

And suddenly, that balance disappears.

At Glasgow Care Foundation, we sit at that point.
The moment where someone has run out of options.

We don’t deal in theory. We deal in reality.

Beds for children.
Cookers for families.
Flooring for empty homes.

The kind of support that doesn’t make headlines, but changes daily life.

And the reality is, we are seeing more of this than ever before.

Because poverty isn’t always about long-term unemployment or crisis.
It’s about pressure.
And right now, that pressure is increasing.

If we want to make a difference in Glasgow, we need to understand that.

Because until we recognise what poverty actually looks like today, we can’t respond to it properly.

We often get messages asking how to access support from Glasgow Care Foundation, so here’s a clear explanation of how the process works.

To receive support, you must be a Glasgow resident (G1–G53) and have lived here for at least 5 years. You also need to have applied for other available support, such as the Scottish Welfare Fund, before coming to us.

All applications must come through a referral from a professional such as Social Work, a Housing Officer, a GP or Citizens Advice.

This process ensures that support is fair, consistent, and reaches those who need it most.

If you’re unsure where to start, speaking to one of these services is the best first step.
