🚨 SHIELDHALL RECYCLING FIRE: WE WARNED THEM! 🚨

The blaze today at the Shieldhall Recycling Centre proves what GMB Branch 40 has been shouting from the rooftops for years: the waste industry is high-risk, and safety MUST come before cost-cutting! 🛑💥

We warned management repeatedly about the critical lack of working sprinkler systems at our waste depots. Telling us that proper fire suppression "costs too much money"is completely unacceptable. Worker safety and public health are non-negotiable!

THE REALITY ON THE FRONTLINE:
⚠️ Ignored Warnings: GMB repeatedly raised serious health & safety concerns regarding non-operational sprinklers and rising fire risks from discarded lithium batteries.
💰Profit Over Safety:Safety measures should NEVER be cut, delayed, or written off as a cost exercise.
🛡️ Protect Our Workers: Our members work in brutal, dangerous conditions every day and deserve maximum protection on shift.

We stand with every worker impacted by today's incident and thank the emergency services currently tackling the blaze on site.

GMB Branch 40 will not let this drop. We will continue pushing for full accountability and immediate health and safety upgrades across all Glasgow depots!

GMB Scotland in Glasgow City Council: Update on Pay & Grading

This afternoon the Joint Unions met with the Scottish Government in an urgent meeting due to the Council beginning the process of dismissing our members on December 31st.

The GMB and Unite aim was and is clear:

The withdrawal of the fire and rehire notices.

The improved offer negotiated at ACAS to be formally proposed so that the Joint Trade Unions members can decide democratically.

To that end we have managed to secure a pause in the fire and rehire process, the proposal is back on the table and we will meet urgently with the Council next week with the sole purpose of bringing an offer back to our members.

Trade Unions are democratic organisations - the organisation itself has no right to make decisions on your behalf.

It is our job to negotiate the best deal possible for the most people we can - we should always then present this to you for you to make the ultimate decision.

The collective wisdom of the workers must make the final call - we cannot decide for you.

GMB and Unite are already working on solutions for the workers who are in detriment - this was the purpose of the negotiated earnings protection until April 2028, which talks could extend further as this was one of our asks - so that when the pay and grading negotiations were concluded the entire focus of the Unions can be on lifting workers who are in detriment out of that.

Both GMB and Unite have already met with Service Heads across the Council to begin a targeted and focused negotiations process aiming to lift our members out of detriment - once that process is concluded those members will have a vote on the outcomes of those local negotiations.

We will update you on any progress or developments next week - it is good news that there has been a pause in fire and rehire - we are committed to enabling our members to make their own decision.

🚨 COSLA PAY FIGHT: FLAT RATE OR WE GO TO THE GATE! ✊🔥

GMB Branch 40 is standing firm alongside our carers and frontline workers across Glasgow. We are continuing the fight with COSLA for a fair flat-rate pay increase that puts money directly into the pockets of those who need it most!

A percentage rise only widens the gap and short-changes low-paid workers. COSLA needs to hear us loud and clear: If we don't get a flat rate, we go to the gate! 🛑💥

Please Note:Not every role will receive backpay, and at this stage, it is not yet known which specific roles will be eligible.
Data Sharing: By completing the form, you agree to GMB passing your details to Glasgow City Council so they can contact you regarding any potential backpay owed.
