It has the makings of an amazing night folks!

Sunset tonight will be 8:39 pm with the last of the light fading by about 9:20 pm. It should be a great night to look up at the dark sky to see something which may be spectacular.

It’s a beautiful day across Ayrshire. The forecast says it will be a clear night with a good chance to see the spectacular Lyrid Meteor Shower with 10 to 15 meteors an hour and surges of activity that could bring up to 100 an hour.

What is this natural event and how does it happen ?

The Lyrid Shower is created from dust particles in the trail of the comet Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. It takes the Comet 415 years to orbit the sun, but each April, the Earth passes through a debris trail from the comet. Tonight it is forecast to reach its 2026 peak.

Most people would have seen a shooting star at some time in their life. The dust of the tonight's Comet that comes into the earth’s atmosphere will burn up very brightly and it will cause a brilliant streak in the clear night sky.

Sunset tonight will be 8:39 pm with the last of the light fading by about 9:20 pm. It should be a great night to look up at the dark sky to see something which may be spectacular.
