Could you help raise awareness of bowel cancer in your local community? 📢

Bowel Cancer UK are looking for volunteers aged 16+ to become Bowel Cancer Awareness Champions. This flexible role gives you the opportunity to help spread vital information about the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer, encouraging earlier diagnosis and improving outcomes for those affected. 💙

You can support this campaign in a way that works for you. Some volunteers share social media content from home, while others display posters in their local area or help raise awareness through their workplace. No previous experience is needed, and there's no long-term commitment. You'll receive a toolkit, guidance, and ongoing support to help you get started.

If you'd like to use your voice to support an important cause and help your community become more aware of bowel cancer symptoms, we'd love to hear from you. Visit the Community Hub page to register your interest. (link in the comments)

Last week, out friends from Community Transport – Your Wee Red Bus welcomed volunteers, partners and community leaders to a special Afternoon Tea to celebrate Volunteers’ Week and thank the people who make so much of their work possible. ☕🍰

The afternoon was a chance to slow down, enjoy a cuppa, and most importantly, spend time together. Staff from VAER and HSCP kindly volunteered on the day by helping to set up, serve tea and coffee, and wash up afterwards.

We were also delighted to welcome Provost Montague, Council Leader Owen O'Donnell and Danny Devlin, who took the opportunity to meet volunteers, hear their stories and thank them personally for everything they do. 🙏

Volunteers are at the heart of so many community services, giving their time, skills and kindness to support others. Events like this are a wonderful reminder of the difference they make and the connections they help create across our communities.

A huge thank you to Community Transport for hosting such a lovely afternoon, and to every volunteer whose contribution helps make East Renfrewshire a stronger, more connected place. 💛

Small actions. Big impacts. 💜

Communities thrive when people come together to support one another. Across East Renfrewshire, volunteers help create opportunities, build connections and make local activities possible.

Thanks to our amazing volunteers, we've been able to:
✔ Support local residents
✔ Run community activities
✔ Create welcoming spaces at The Community Hub

Together, here's what we've achieved this year:
💜 165 new volunteers registered
💜 322 volunteers matched into opportunities
💜 Thousands of community connections made

Finding purpose through volunteering

Following a recent diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, David was keen to continue giving back to his community and maintain a sense of purpose in his everyday life 💙

With a strong background in volunteering, including roles with the Children’s Panel and a local food bank, David has always seen volunteering as a way of “giving back”, connecting with others, and maintaining independence.

With support from Talking Points, David explored a range of opportunities to find the right fit, something practical, hands-on, and meaningful. He is now volunteering at the Black Door Shop in Giffnock, where he helps welcome visitors, sort donations, and support the team each week. This role supports David’s wellbeing and helps him stay active, connected, and independent.

This positive outcome highlights the value of person-centred support. By focusing on David’s strengths and aspirations, he has been able to find a role that supports both his wellbeing and sense of identity.

David’s story is a reminder that a diagnosis does not define a person’s ability to contribute, and that meaningful roles in the community are still very much possible with the right support.

🙏 Thank you to all the organisations and partners who help make opportunities like this possible.

💜 Today we celebrate 🎉

Young people play a vital role in our community by building connections, supporting others, and helping create positive change every day.

During , we’re especially proud to recognise the incredible contribution of young volunteers across East Renfrewshire.

Through our Make It Happen programme, young people gained confidence, learned new skills and made a real difference. They supported local services and helped others feel more connected and included.

📸 This photo shows just a few of the amazing young people who have volunteered with us.

Every step they take, whether trying something new, helping others or working towards their future, helps strengthen our community.
