Yogi at the dog show at Eaglesham Fair!

10/06/2026

Our Glasgow Southside group were in attendance at Eaglesham Fair on Saturday, raising awareness and vital funds for Guide Dogs Scotland.

The group, which included volunteers and dogs, raised a fantastic £457! A big thank you to those at the fair who popped by and contributed to such a great total. 💙

The Southside volunteers would love to welcome new members to their group. Whether you are able to help at events such as this, even just for an hour or two, or if you’ve got the organisational skills to take the lead and help coordinate, we’d love to hear from you!

You can apply online at www.guidedogs.org.uk/volunteer or if you’d like a chat about local opportunities, drop Emma a message on [email protected].

GOOD MORNING.
Liberty speaking. 🐾
Guide dog.
Professional navigator.
Emotional support for a man who refuses to use technology.

Currently standing at a kerb, assessing traffic, while he stands behind me powered purely by optimism.

Let’s have a quick educational moment…
because people think I magically know where we’re going.

I don’t.

I am the guide.
Not the planner.
Not the sat nav.
Not Google Maps with fur.

Wayne decides where we’re going.
Wayne gives the directions.
I make sure he doesn’t accidentally walk into a skip, a bus, or 1997.

Now here’s the part that concerns me…

This man has technology.

He has Google Maps.
VoiceVista.
BlindSquare.
More navigation apps than NASA.

Does he use them?

Does he heck.

No.

His navigation system is called:
“Walk and hope for the best.”

We’ll set off and he’ll go,
“Right Lib… Tesco is… this way… I think…”

THINK?

Sir, this isn’t a treasure hunt.

I’m standing there like:
“You have 47 navigation apps and you’re choosing vibes?”

He walks with the confidence of a man
who absolutely does not know where he is.

Honestly…
if confidence were direction,
we’d never be lost.

But no.

He prefers the old-fashioned method:
Just walk and see what happens.

Sometimes we find the destination.
Sometimes we find a completely different postcode.
Sometimes we find a Greggs…
which he claims was the plan all along.

Now let’s talk about my actual job when the harness goes on.

I follow HIS directions.
I avoid obstacles.
I stop at kerbs.
I keep him safe.

Unless he tells me to do something unsafe.

Then I activate:
✨ Intelligent Disobedience ✨

Which means if he says,
“Forward, Lib,”
and I can see a car coming…

I refuse.

I plant my paws.
I become a furry statue.

He’ll say it again:
“Forward, Lib…”

And I’m thinking:
“Absolutely not.
I am not stepping into traffic
because you’re feeling optimistic.”

That’s intelligent disobedience.
Saving his life
while questioning his decision-making.

And now…
The Lamppost Incident.

A couple of weeks ago.

We stepped off the Buzz bus.
I was NOT in harness.
Just on a lead.
Off duty.
Thinking about breakfast.

This man steps off like
he’s got full GPS signal in his soul.

No apps.
No directions.
Just blind confidence.

Two steps forward…

BANG.

Straight into a lamppost.

That lamppost has probably been there
since the 1940s.
It survived the war.
It survived decades.

Then Wayne arrived.

He hit it like he was greeting an old friend.

Rubbed his head.
Paused.
Looked offended.

Sir…
you walked into it.
With commitment.

Did I stop him?

No.

Why?

Because I was off duty.
That was a self-guided adventure.

So let’s summarise this partnership:

He has technology — refuses to use it.
He has directions — mostly guesses.
He has confidence — endless.

He provides chaos.
I provide survival.

Without me, he’d still be outside the front gate
trying to locate Stoke-on-Trent.

Love,
Liberty 🐾
Guide dog.
Navigator.
Currently guiding a man powered purely by hope.
