We're heading to Ryton Festival this Saturday!

Following a fantastic time at Pride last weekend, the Project Groundwater Northumbria team will be at Ryton Festival on Saturday 4 July.

Come along to meet the team, find out more about our work, and chat with us about flooding and groundwater in your area. We're always keen to hear local experiences and answer any questions you may have.

We'll also have colouring sheets and activities for children throughout the day.

If you're visiting the festival, make sure to stop by and say hello! ❤

World Environment Day – Protect what you can’t see

Groundwater is a vital yet often overlooked resource. It sits beneath our feet in rocks and soils, but plays a huge role in our daily lives.

- It helps supply drinking water
- It naturally feeds rivers, wetlands, and even coastal waters
- It supports ecosystems and wildlife

However, pollutants like oils, chemicals, and waste can soak into the ground over time, building up in groundwater and spreading into rivers and the sea.

Because groundwater moves slowly, pollution can last for years and is very difficult to remove once it gets there.

The good news? We can all help protect it:

- Safely dispose of household chemicals and waste
- Reduce unnecessary water use
- Support policies that protect the environment

By protecting groundwater, we’re protecting our communities, our rivers, and our coastlines.

PGN will be at Barmoor Hub, Ryton on Saturday 11th April.

Pop along to meet the team, find out more about what we do, and have a chat about groundwater and flooding in your area.

We’ll also have colouring activities for children, so it’s a great one for families too.

We’d love to see you there - come and say hello!

It’s National Groundwater Awareness Week!

Did you know groundwater national awareness week falls in the second week of March? It’s all about recognising how important groundwater is and why we need to understand it better.

Here at Project Groundwater Northumbria, we’re working with residents, councils, and partners to:

• Understand how groundwater behaves in real communities
• Learn from monitoring and local stories
• Reduce the impacts of groundwater flooding
• Develop tools to make it easier to get help and information

Groundwater might be hidden, but your experiences help bring it to life.

Thanks for being part of the conversation.

January STEM Highlights!

During January, the Project Groundwater Northumbria team visited the Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils at KESER and Brighton Avenue Primary Schools to deliver STEM sessions. We had an incredible time!

The children were full of enthusiasm and eager to get involved. Their knowledge of the water cycle and geography was outstanding, far beyond what we usually expect at primary level.

We truly believe we’ve met some of the next generation’s groundwater guardians, climate activists and future engineers.

Thank you to both schools for welcoming us so warmly. We can’t wait to come back!
