Many of you may already have seen that the Five Bridges Roundabout will be closed from 21 June until 16 July as part of the ongoing demolition of the Gateshead Flyover.
While saying goodbye to the flyover is an important step for the future of the area, we know that changes to familiar routes can cause concern, particularly if you regularly travel into Gateshead town centre.
For drivers
Gateshead Council has provided details of the roads affected by the closure, along with diversion routes to help people continue their journeys. Due to the increased number of vehicles expected to use these alternative routes, drivers are advised to allow extra time for travel wherever possible.
For more information about the closures and diversions, please visit: https://www.gateshead.gov.uk/article/38163/Roundabout-closures-as-flyover-demolition-continues
For bus users
Go North East has been working hard to minimise disruption during the closure period. Many services in the Gateshead area will be diverted, with routes adjusted along four main corridors: Sunderland Road, Old Durham Road, Durham Road and Split Crow Road.
A free shuttle bus service will also be available to help keep communities on Sunderland Road and Old Durham Road connected with Heworth and Gateshead Interchanges.
Go North East has said:
"During this period many Go North East services in the Gateshead area will be rerouted, with diversions split into four main corridors; Sunderland Road, Old Durham Road, Durham Road, and Split Crow Road. Beyond Gateshead, services across our network may also experience delays due to traffic caused by the works."
