Celebrate Gateshead's greatest celebrity vegetable (a vegebrity?) next Monday, 17 August, at the second Swalwell Cabbage Festival!

Join us at Metrocentre Community Hub, 10am to 3pm, and discover the legend of the mighty Swalwell Cabbage. It's believed to be the biggest red cabbage ever grown. Weighing a whopping 55kg (about the same as 11 pet cats, and at least five times as heavy as a regular-sized cabbage), it measured over a metre tall – taller than the average three-year-old!

Come along for a fun family day out, with a fact-filled trail around the Metrocentre, storytelling, games and drop-in crafts, brought to you in partnership with the Tyne Derwent Way, The World is Storytelling and Gateshead Food Partnership.

Surely your easiest store-cupboard favourite: nutritious, comfort food on a budget that is easy to make and can easily be ‘bulked out’ and adapted to add what you’ve got in the fridge. Thanks for sharing your recipe tips, The Pickle Palace CIO !

A beautiful day in Gateshead town centre! The sun was shining and we had lots of encounters and conversations with people interested in joining the movement towards Good Food in Gateshead. In our Food Partnership area we had a tombola, quizzes, making Latin American fruit salads, a pickling workshop, tastes of tea from around the world with locally grown plants, creative banner making, and gave out some absolutely delicious early apples and other locally grown produce, plants, and seeds. Celebrating and showcasing some amazing organisations in Gateshead Hope Beyond Borders The Bank, Chopwell The Comfrey Project gatesheadfoodpartnership St Chad's Community Project

Then under the arches we had the brilliantly Anthony O’Shaughnessy leading a cookery theatre with local businesses and Gwen from Gateshead Council Brighten The Day did a demo about cooking with children and young people. And of course, the Community Cook Off saw 12 groups battle each other cooking with ingredients freshly picked from . The food they made looked delicious!

Thank you so much to all who made it happen and came along!
