Feeding Families

Feeding Families North East England food poverty charity supporting the local community Our Emergency Food Boxes provide food that will support 2 people for 3 days.

Feeding Families’ work started in 2016 as a personal project, providing Christmas hampers to a small number of families in desperate need over the festive period. In October 2017, Feeding Families as an organisation was truly born when a request went out on social media to find people interested in participating in the Christmas hamper scheme – and the response was overwhelming! The concept evolve

d and grew year-on-year, and by December 2019 the charity was organising hampers for more than 3,000 families affected by food poverty across the North-East. In 2020, Feeding Families rose to the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic and, in partnership with other regional charities and organisation, began to supply weekly food packages to those most vulnerable. Today, Feeding Families operates 365-days of the year, with two packaging centres, one in Blaydon, Gateshead, and the second in Fishburn. Country Durham. Our army of 3,000 volunteers help to provide in excess of 2,000 emergency food boxes. In Christmas 2022, we supported over 11,000 households. We also offer food support to those recently discharged from hospital with our ‘Welcome Home Boxes’. Many of these individuals are not well enough to go food shopping or may not have family who can support them. The food in these boxes is designed so no cooking is required. All the food in the boxes comes from the support of grants and the community via food and monetary donations.

✨ We’ve done this before… but not quite like this. ✨

Looking back at some of the incredible moments from our previous Feeding Families balls, we’re reminded just how special these nights can be. 💜

We’ve filled rooms, raised vital funds, made memories and brought together some brilliant people and businesses - all with one shared purpose: supporting families across our region.

And we absolutely LOVE that so many familiar faces who have joined us at previous balls are coming back again. 🥰

But this year? We’re levelling it up.

🍭 The Pure Imagination Ball is set to be our most ambitious event yet. A night filled with imagination, entertainment, surprises and a little bit of magic - all while raising vital funds for Feeding Families.

So these photos might give you a little taste of what our balls are like…

But they won’t show you what’s coming. 👀✨

This delivery feels a little bit different. 💜

A delivery of our Essential Food Boxes has arrived from the brilliant Durham Box, who kindly sponsor our boxes - from our food collection boxes to the boxes that help us get our provision out to families across the North East.

But this batch is a special one.

They’re the first boxes to carry our new strapline:

More than food. A way forward.

Because an Essential Food Box can meet an immediate need, but what we’re working towards goes beyond that moment - helping people through crisis with dignity, support and a way forward.

A huge thank you to for continuing to support what we do and helping us bring this next chapter to life. 💜

EVERY FAMILY'S STORY IS DIFFERENT.

No two families experience crisis in the same way.

That's why there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution.

By working with professionals who already know the families they support, we're able to provide help that's appropriate, timely and centred around individual need.

Every family deserves to be treated as individuals.

Volunteering days don’t all look the same here at Feeding Families.

Today we’ve had a brilliant team of employees from Greggs volunteering with us - and they’ve been tackling a very different kind of job!

They’ve been whitewashing our offices, glossing skirting boards and doors, and helping give our space a much-needed refresh.

They’ve been a great laugh, incredibly kind and have even offered to come back next week to do some more. We’ll definitely be taking them up on that!

These kinds of volunteering days make such a difference behind the scenes. Every job our volunteers help us tick off means more time and resources can stay focused on supporting families across our communities.

And sometimes, what we need is a few extra pairs of hands and a paintbrush!

A huge thank you to the Greggs team for getting stuck in today.

Could your team spend a day volunteering with Feeding Families?

We have opportunities for businesses to get involved in all sorts of ways, depending on what we need at the time.

Partner Spotlight: Doorways

60–70 people. Every single day.

That’s how many people Doorways is currently feeding - and they’re seeing new faces all the time.

They provide hot meals, showers and practical support to people experiencing homelessness and hardship, alongside workshops for vulnerable women and coffee mornings for older people.

But perhaps the best way to understand their work is to hear directly from someone doing it:

“All the staff and volunteers here have lived experience. I started as a volunteer when I was homeless eight years ago. We’re like a family here. I love it.

When I started volunteering here it helped me with my mental health. There are lots of people worse off who need help.

We’re feeding 60–70 people a day at Doorways and we see new faces here all the time, some as young as 21 years old who are sleeping rough on the streets.

Working together to help people is what we’re all about. Feeding Families have been amazing. They offer us rough sleeper packs and hygiene packs to help the homeless, but also their essentials boxes which we use to make meals for those coming to get a hot dinner.

Families and professionals are also struggling.”

This is why partnership working matters.

Through organisations like Doorways, our support reaches people where they already feel safe and connected – whether that's an essentials box that can be turned into hot meals, a hygiene pack or practical supplies for someone sleeping rough.

And behind every box is a person, a story and often an organisation doing everything it can to make sure somebody doesn't face a difficult time alone.

This is what partnership looks like. 💜

We’re proud to work alongside Housing 4 Good to make sure that when someone moves into a new home, they have some of the everyday essentials they need to help make it feel like one.

It’s more than food. It’s taking away one more worry, offering a little breathing space and helping people move forward.

And our partnership doesn’t stop here. We’re incredibly grateful to have Housing 4 Good as Headline Sponsor of our Pure Imagination Ball this October, continuing to stand alongside Feeding Families and the people we support.

Thank you, Housing 4 Good, for believing in what we do and for being part of it. 💜
