"The performance of not caring, or being excellently non-excellent."

In our launch webinar for Being Seen, Being Heard, Feeling Connected, Benjamin Turner names something that will resonate with anyone working with young people. Success culture on one side. Humiliation culture on the other. And in between, a generation learning to protect themselves by performing indifference.

This matters for everyone working with young people through singing and vocal work. If we understand why they're holding back, we can begin to create the spaces where they don't have to.

✨They were waiting for a referral… so the choir filled the gap.✨

With long waits for support and many referrals closed without treatment, creative practice is already stepping in — yet it’s rarely recognised within clinical systems.

For many children and young people — especially those in care, healthcare, or secure settings — opportunities to make choices and feel in control can be limited.

Singing and vocal work can open up a space to express, connect, and be heard — helping young people recognise that their voice matters.

Here's how it looks in practice:

đź’Ş Giving young people agency and input on repertoire choice, creative process and their own level of involvement;

🎤 Creative vocal practices (rap, beatboxing, lyric writing)

⚖️Balancing structure and freedom

🤝 Meeting young people where they are.

This is one of many insights from Being Seen, Being Heard: Feeling Connected — our latest publication on singing, mental health and wellbeing. In it, we dive into what we've learned so far from research and practitioners on the ground working in this area.

Our new publication is here.

Being Seen, Being Heard, Feeling Connected explores the role of singing and vocal work in supporting children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing — not just in theory, but in real, meaningful ways.

Drawing on over 50 sources of evidence, practice insight and lived experience, this think piece maps what we know, what’s emerging, and where we still need to learn.

It’s not a toolkit or a final answer — it’s an invitation to explore, reflect and build understanding together.
