Today we’re celebrating Makaton International Awareness Day!

Makaton is a way of communicating using signs, symbols and speech and plays a pivotal role at our specialist school and colleges.

It enables our students to express themselves, understand others and connect with those around them.

The theme of these year’s awareness day is Together, so what better way to celebrate than by learning the Makaton sign for this?

Supported at Shaftesbury Stirling Road in Bournemouth, Mark has gained confidence by learning to make smarter shopping choices.

Previously he found it difficult to manage clutter and often bought things he didn’t need. Together with staff, he came up with the simple concept of ‘one in, one out’.

Now every time Mark buys something new, he chooses an item to donate, sell or throw away.

This approach means he’s become more organised, better at budgeting, and loves finding the best deals! Don’t we all?!

We’re proud of everything Mark has achieved and the independence he continues to build every day.

Need help with hoarding?

Phil has been supported by Shaftesbury for most of his life. Now in his 50s, he is sharing his story to try and help others who find it hard to let go of belongings.

An accident forced him to address his hoarding and with support from staff, Phil’s home has been completely transformed.

Aloha Bournemouth! 🌺🌴

Our supported living service in Bournemouth brought everyone together for a Hawaiian-themed summer party, filled with music and dancing, and plenty of delicious food.

The garden at Shaftesbury Stirling Road was transformed with decorations and colourful garlands to create some tropical fun.

The party gave the people we support the chance to use their skills, make their own choices and create memories together.

“Days like these remind us exactly why we do what we do, creating a happy, vibrant, and loving home for everyone at Stirling Road and across our wider Shaftesbury family. Here is to many more celebrations together!” says Team Leader, Fikayo.

We’re looking for volunteers to support our Learning Together training programme. Could you spare some time each week to help a person with disabilities grow?

You’ll be great at this if you are:

💚 Friendly and encouraging
😊 Patient and good with people
🖥️ Confident using simple digital tools

We offer full training, ongoing support and an enhanced DBS check. Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcome. 1–2 hours a week could make a huge difference to someone’s life.
