Today is World Environment Day and the start of our global campaign journey.

In 107 days, on September 20, the world will come together again for World Cleanup Day.

This year, we are launching Strive for 5 - a global call to engage 5% of the world’s population in one shared action: cleaning up our planet.

Over the past 8 years, 139 million people have already taken part. We are aiming even higher this year - and we need you.

Every action matters. Every person counts. And together, small actions become powerful collective change.

Join us. Be part of the 5%.

EXTREME LITTER PICKING in today’s World Cleanup Day UK mini litter pick thanks to challenging British summertime conditions. A lot of lightweight plastic blowing merrily about in the breeze and I needed both sunglasses and waterproof at different points (and sometimes both at once).

Our UK coordinator Gill Davidson has a letter published in The Guardian last week, and it's a timely reminder that the waste crisis isn't just physical.

Data storage is responsible for more carbon emissions than the entire commercial airline industry. Datacentres already consume 6% of electricity supply in both the UK and the US.

And yet, most of us never think twice before taking another photo, keeping another file, or letting our cloud storage quietly balloon in the background.

Digital Cleanup Day may have been in March, but responsible data management doesn't have a season. Any day is the right day to delete the photos you no longer need, clear out old files, and unsubscribe from the emails you never read. These aren't small acts. They reduce demand for data storage, help your devices run better and last longer, and they're part of the same mindset that brings millions of people together every 20 September.

Why should you register for World Cleanup Day?

Waste doesn't disappear. It sits in our streets, washes into our rivers, and ends up in our oceans. The systems meant to deal with it are broken, and they won't fix themselves.

When 5% of a population takes action, something remarkable happens. It stops being a movement and starts becoming a norm: behaviours shift, governments listen, industries follow.

On 20 September 2026, millions of people across 200+ countries will step outside and do something about it.

So register. Not just to clean up a park. But to be part of the number that changes everything.

Happy Earth Day from all of us at World Cleanup Day UK 🌍

Today belongs to this planet, and to every single person who loves it enough to show up for it.

Earth Day is a powerful reminder that taking action for our planet isn't optional. It's our job. And it matters more now than it ever has.

Earth Day is the heartbeat of everything we do. It's the reason communities across the UK organised cleanups in their parks, on their beaches, along their rivers. It's the reason we ask: how do we get more people involved?

This year, our answer is the Strive for Five campaign - our goal to involve 5% of the population by 2030. Not because it's a nice round number, but because 5% is the tipping point - the moment a movement becomes unstoppable.

World Cleanup Day 2026 is officially here, and registrations are now open.

Every year, millions of people across the globe step outside, roll up their sleeves, and do something extraordinary together. This year, we're doing it bigger, bolder, and with one clear goal in sight:

STRIVE FOR FIVE

5% of the world's population.
That's the tipping point.
The critical mass needed to spark real, lasting, systemic change in how we treat our planet.

Whether you want to organise a local cleanup or simply join one near you, now is the time to register and be part of the biggest civic movement on Earth.
