📢 The NEU Save Education conference is coming to Manchester.

📅 19-20 September
📍 Radisson Blu Hotel, Manchester Airport

The government has announced further cuts to school budgets and is failing to reverse the long-term decline in education workers’ pay.

As part of the Save Education campaign, the NEU will open a formal ballot for strike action over pay and funding on 3 October. Join us to find out more about the Save Education campaign and how you can get involved.

The conference is open to all NEU members, especially those who are not yet workplace reps.
Travel expenses and subsistence will be reimbursed. Accommodation will also be provided.

On October 3rd the NEU will be opening the national ballot in order to save education.
‘a formal ballot over a substantial increase in school funding and significant steps towards pay restoration, to open on 3 October’.
By ensuring all details are up to date and correct by the 3rd of October 2026 allows all information or news to be shared to members.

Statement from Gateshead Council about this year's pay award

"We're pleased to share that the pay award for 2026/27 has been finalised.

Colleagues on grades A to N (on the Gateshead Council "Green Book" pay framework) will receive a 3.3% increase to their basic salary, effective from 1 April 2026.

If you are paid on an apprentice pay rate, you will be contacted separately with information about how the pay award applies to you.

Some allowances will also increase by 3.3%. Where these allowances apply to Gateshead Council roles, the increase will take effect from 1 April 2026.

The pay increase will be included in your salary payment on 19 September 2026. This payment will also include any back pay owed from 1 April 2026.

If you have questions about how the pay award affects your salary or allowances, speak to your line manager in the first instance. You can also contact HR Advice at [email protected].

If you are a line manager or leader, please share this message with your teams.

If you receive Universal Credit, the backdated element of this pay award may affect your benefit entitlement. A higher payment in September, which includes back pay, could change the amount of Universal Credit you receive for that assessment period.

If you think you may be affected, contact your Universal Credit Work Coach through your online account or call the Universal Credit Helpline on 0800 328 5644 for advice"

On 28 February, we will launch an indicative ballot asking members if they would be prepared to strike over pay, funding and workload.

Chronic underfunding means fewer teaching assistants and larger classes.
