The Skill Mill has made a pledge to provide £1 million worth of environmental improvements for local voluntary and community groups across the UK over the next 12 months, in addition to its regular contracted work.

You can help us to achieve this by sponsoring our work.

For £500 per day, you can fund a Skill Mill team to carry out activities such as garden makeovers, painting & decorating, building raised beds, removing invasive species, erecting fences, litter cleanups, and clearing unsightly areas.

The Skill Mill works with young ex-offenders aged 16-18 years, providing six months of paid employment in practical environmental work. They receive training, educational opportunities, and mentoring to help them into follow-on work. From 2020-24, The Skill Mill employed 222 young people across the UK, and 203 of them have not re-offended. This means our re-conviction rate is 8.5%, compared to 63.8% of national reoffending rates (England and Wales) for young people aged under 18, according to the Ministry of Justice.

We currently have Skill Mill teams working across the UK with more teams and areas being added over the coming months. This means there are opportunities to fund improvements to take place in a particular location.

A team from the Surrey Skill Mill programme have helped to build planters and create three temporary parklets for a behaviour changing walking project run by Active Surrey.

The Chertsey Pop-Up Trail will run until September with a Bugs and Blooms activity trail, ‘pause and rest’ parklets, rewards and prizes to encourage people to take more short everyday trips on foot. Walking for 20 minutes daily is good for our physical and mental health.

It has been a pleasure working with Ross and the Skill Mill team in Dorking, and especially rewarding to collaborate directly with the young people who helped build and install the community parklets. Almost a third of young people in England and Wales who offend go on to do so again. Behind that statistic sit young lives pushed further from the future they could have had, communities carrying the cost, and a justice system under growing strain.

Today, we're proud to announce a landmark Social Outcomes Partnership between The Skill Mill, Youth Endowment Fund and Bridges Outcomes Partnerships to help change that trajectory - at scale.

The partnership launched in March 2026 and will support up to 352 young people across up to 22 local authorities with paid work on environmental projects in their own communities, alongside personalised training and support.

🟢 It's the UK's largest social outcomes partnership by number of delivery areas.

Outcome funders - the participating local authorities - pay only once measurable outcomes are achieved. The programme's impact will be rigorously evaluated through a randomised control trial, funded by the Youth Endowment Fund and conducted by ICF.

The Skill Mill has a proven track record of helping young people move on from offending. Over the past decade, the combination of paid outdoor work and personalised support has delivered strong results, improving young people's prospects and their local environment at the same time 🍃

This Social Outcomes Partnership builds on that foundation, taking a model that works and extending its reach across the country.
