Backbone is a unique organisation, we are an environmental organisation targeting marginalised communities with outstanding results as we change the landscape of engagement in the sector. Our success is in developing role models from within communities that would not normally engage with nature. We entice and excite communities of all backgrounds and abilities to own and benefit from engagement wi

th nature and in doing so they form a relationship based on respect and protection for the environment. We believe:

Nature is a powerful medium to develop people’s potential as leaders and address social issues such as physical and mental health, social cohesion, isolation, family unity, conservation and education and to build sustainable and integrated communities. For people to understand and protect nature they must first form a relationship with it based on positive experiences and connectedness through sharing and respecting different cultural values and traditions. There is a lack of role models in the environmental sector from marginalised communities, particularly Black and Ethnic Minority who have limited access to or lack the opportunity to benefit from nature. In partnership working based on genuine intention for the direct benefit of local communities. Our partners support us through funding, in-kind services and in an advisory capacity. They provide continued support for our participants back in their own community.
